Below lies a flooded mine void, the space where miners extracted tons of anthracite coal from the ground to be shipped to (old) Philadelphia using canals along the Schuylkill River or railroads paralleling its course. ☣

🌬 The Philadelphia Department of Public Health’s Air Management Services, the division responsible for monitoring air quality in the city, is holding a hearing tonight - Wednesday, August 10th at 6pm for public input into proposed revisions to its regulations.

☣ The regulations, which haven’t been updated since 1981, would expand the list of toxic chemicals monitored from 97 to 217 substances, something the Clean Air Council supports (check out their action alert here). The Clean Air Council is also asking that Air Management Services go further.

🏥 The proposed revisions consider the health effects of toxic chemicals one at a time, but the Clean Air Council’s Russell Zerbo points out that, in the real world, people are exposed to multiple toxic chemicals, and measurement of impact should be done cumulatively rather than separately.

"Let’s say that the toothpaste splattered on the bathroom mirror bothers you. Every time you clean the mirror you are reminded that you’re the only person who does this job and it’s frustrating that no one else cares enough to clean it up.

The first step toward peace of mind is finding out if you are the person making the mess. Clean the mirror, then brush your teeth and observe. If it’s you, let the resentment go, keep cleaning up after yourself and modify the action."
