Eight Philly Farmers Markets to visit during National Farmers Market Week and beyond

This week is National Farmers Market Week and Grid is doing a round-up of eight of our favorite Philly Farmers Markets to mark the occasion. Even as many of us are realizing the value of local food during the pandemic, the Farmers Market Coalition reports that 57% of farmers market operators surveyed had seen an additional $1000 in operating costs during the pandemic. Here are some of the bountiful markets you can visit in the city to help your local farmers offset those expenses: 

1. Chestnut Hill Market 

This market sells produce and micro-greens from Taproot Farm, handmade pasta from The Pasta Lab, artisan mushrooms from Primordia Farm and much more. Please visit the Farm to City website if you would like to pre-order from vendors by the Thursday leading up to market day.

2. Farmers Market at Christ Church This market offers a broad selection of fresh produce, bread, sweets, herbal household goods and more from vendors who include: Taproot Farm, Lost Bread Co., Beechwood Orchards, Aurora Grace Chocolates, Old City Coffee, Terra Luna Herbals, Mediterranean Delicacy, Cherry Grove Farm, and Pasta Lab.

Time: Wednesday, 4 -7p.m.

Location: Church Street between 2nd & 3rd streets

Public transportation: SEPTA Routes: Market Frankford Line, 2nd Street Stop

3. Clark Park Market 

This market has been a year-round staple in West Philly since 1998 with the support of Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, Friends of Clark Park and the University of the Sciences. It is known for its wide variety of local goods, which include fruits, vegetables, baked and canned goods, meats and specialty products. 4. East Falls Farmers Market

Here you will find cookies, muffins, cakes and more from Amira’s Delites, goat cheese, yogurt and milk from Betty’s Acres, and an assortment of local wines from Chaddsford Winery. Fresh produce from Everwild Farm and McCann’s Produce includes locally grown microgreens, basil, scallions, carrots, curly kale, shishito peppers, heirloom tomatoes, Japanese eggplant, cippolini onions, spinach, shitake, portobello, cremini, oyster, and maitake mushrooms and more.

Time: Saturday (rain or shine) 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Location: 4100 Ridge Avenue under the twin bridges

Public transportation: SEPTA Routes: 1, 61, K, R, Manayunk-Norristown Line (East Falls Station)

5. Fairmount Farmers Market 

This market is located directly across from the Eastern State Penitentiary and features weekly vendors: Beechwood Orchards, Ben’s Produce Fruits and vegetables, Dave’s Backyard Farms–Local chemical-free produce Deer Creek Malthouse, for specialty malt ingredients for food and beverages made with locally grown grain, as well as Philly based Nilaa Coffee and Ursa Bakery.

Payments accepted: Cash, SNAP/ACCESS cards, Philly Food Bucks and WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) vouchers.

Time: Thursday, 3-7 p.m. (3-3:30 p.m. reserved for seniors/immunocompromised shoppers)

6. Fitler Square Farmers Market 

This market has been held in beautiful Fitler Square Park since 2003. The market features fresh produce from Brogue Hydroponics as well as locally crafted beer, coffee and wine. Find details on The Food Trust’s webpage.

7. Headhouse Square Market

This market is one of The Food Trust’s largest farmers markets with a rotating cast of nearly 50 vendors. In addition to offering an abundant range of vegetables and locally grown fruit, vendors offer a variety of prepared foods, as well as artisan desserts, cheese, coffee and wine. 8. Rittenhouse Farmers Market 

This market has a varied array of local products which include eggs from Gail’s Exotic Egg Farm, teas and tinctures to boost the immune system from Tooth of the Lion Apothecary Farm, stinging nettles, watercress, garlic mustard, fennel fronds, and more from Wild & Wonderful Foods, as well as many other unique offerings from area farms.
