    Ärtsoppa, or Swedish yellow pea soup, is the traditional Thursday night supper in Sweden during the winter that dates back to medieval times. ASHM’s Pea Soup Dinner is served with sharp Swedish cheese, crisp bread, and Swedish pancakes and coffee for dessert. There will also be a cash bar. Gather with friends and family to enjoy time together at the Museum. Don’t miss out on this delightful meal! Pre-registration is required by January 24th. $30 for members, $35 for nonmembers.

    Celebrate Easter like a Swede at the American Swedish Historical Museum’s Easter Family Day! Join us on Sunday, April 6th, from 2-4 pm to experience Swedish Easter traditions. In Sweden, Easter kicks off with a trick-or-treat-like candy hunt on Maundy Thursday. Children dress up as Easter witches with long skirts, headscarves, painted red cheeks, and freckles and go from house to house, wishing people Happy Easter. At our celebration, children can make Swedish Easter crafts, dress up as Easter witches, enjoy face-painting, and take part in a traditional egg hunt. We will have two egg hunts, one for kids ages

Enjoy traditional Norwegian recipes, a special kransekake from MANDEL bakery, and the opportunity to meet Susan Satkowski, Honorary Consul General to Norway. Across the Atlantic explores the trans-Atlantic journey of the first organized group of Norwegian immigrants to sail to the United States.     Join ASHM and the National Museum of the United States Navy (NMUSN) for the grand opening reception of And Let Victory Tell the Rest: 250 Years of Shipbuilding in Greater Philadelphia. This exhibition, curated by NMUSN, explores the production of American naval ships in the Delaware Valley, tracing the roles which the people of Philadelphia and the surrounding areas had in developing America’s Navy over the past 250 years. At one time the lakes of central Sweden were filled with crayfish, but overfishing decimated their population. Eventually, the government prohibited the catching of crayfish except for a short time in late summer.     Start your Christmas celebrations by indulging in a Swedish holiday dinner prepared by Jeffrey A. Miller Hospitality Group. Julbord, or “Christmas Table,” is a Scandinavian feast where a wide variety of foods are served buffet style, or, as Swedes say, smörgåsbord. A traditional Julbord takes place on December 24th and is one of the highlights of the Christmas celebration for Swedes. Some menu items on a traditional Julbord are remnants of Viking spreads from mid-winter solstice celebrations, while other originate from the turn of the twentieth century in Sweden. A modern favorite dish, meatballs, was only added in the 1970s!
