Many people have heard an owl, but few have ever seen one. Mt. Cuba’s varied landscapes and topography provide the ideal habitats for three of Delaware’s native owl species – the barred, great horned, and Eastern screech – and winter is the best time to spot them roosting in our trees. Owls are nocturnal so join us as we search for them just after dusk. Following a brief introductory lecture, we’ll head into the garden and listen for their unique calls. Dress for the weather. Saturday, February 1 from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm Weathering the Winter Winters were harsh in the 18th century, but even in cold and snowy weather there was still plenty of work to do around the farm. Fires had to be built, food preserved and cooked, and animals needed tending. Visit the Farmstead on February 1st to watch our living historians demonstrate the types of farm chores a family like the Wentzes would have had to do this time of year. Glen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter. Welsh Road Library will host Minas for a small music program. Minas introduces students to the country of Brazil through its music, Samba and Bossa Nova. After performing examples of Brazilian music and presenting historic, geographical and educational references, they introduce Brazil’s famous festival Carnaval, demonstrating authentic Brazilian percussion instruments - surdo, tamborim, repinique, agogô, reco-reco, ganzá, pandeiro, and cuíca. Participation is enhanced by engaging students to sing in Portuguese (the language of Brazil), scat, and play Brazilian samba percussion (instruments supplied). Students learn while being engaged and having fun.
Hellerick’s Adventure Farm is open for the 2025 season on Saturday, April 5-Sunday, April 6 from 10am-6pm. For its second weekend of the season, the 30-acre Family Farm will offer its six signature attractions – barnyard mini-golf, the aerial adventure, silo climbing wall, goat yoga the goat experience and tractor rides. They will also be accepting reservations for birthday parties and field trips. Admission is $14.99, while children under 34 inches tall are always free! Parking is also free. Visitors can BYO their own food. Reservations are strongly recommended for signature activities.

In Sweden, Easter kicks off with a trick-or-treat-like candy hunt on Maundy Thursday. Children dress up as Easter witches with long skirts, headscarves, painted red cheeks, and freckles and go from house to house, wishing people Happy Easter. This specialty tour investigates many native plants and trees around the pond and near the Wissahickon Creek. It includes a brief history of the Wetland and describes the nature of a wetland ecosystem. The Wetland offers both the beauty and ruggedness created in the environment. Wetlands provide important resources--water, food, shelter--vital for plants, trees and wildlife that create a native abundant habitat. This tour is off-path, and visitors are advised to wear walking or hiking shoes. Meet at the kiosk as you enter the Morris. Park to the left of the garden entrance. Free with general admission!
