Bike Party on MLK Drive for National Ride a Bike Day
Sunday, May 5th from 10am-12pm along MLK Drive and Kelly Drive
PHILADELPHIA- The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and The Bicycle Club of Philadelphia, in cooperation with The Fairmount Park Conservancy and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, will be hosting National Ride A Bike Day 5/5 10am-2pm.
MLK Drive is a focus of this year’s celebration. The City of Philadelphia closes MLK Drive to motor vehicle traffic between the Falls Bridge and Sweetbriar Drive on weekends, every year, to increase recreational access for the public. Closures are in place every weekend from Saturdays at 7 a.m. through Mondays at 7 a.m.
Many Philadelphians and even those from other counties love a car-free MLK Drive. This space has provided a safe area for folks to recreate, learn to ride a bike, host a group ride or run, clear your head, and really the list goes on.
DATE: Sunday, May 5th TIME: 10am-2pm WHERE: Tables will be staffed at the following Fairmount Park locations in Philadelphia (near SEPTA Bus and Regional Rail stops):- MLK Drive & Falls Bridge- MLK Drive & Sweetbriar Cutoff- Kelly Drive & Falls Bridge- #1 Boathouse Row (Kelly Dr & Waterworks Dr)WHO: The Bicycle Club of Philadelphia, The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphiahttps://bicyclecoalition.org/events/bike-party-on-mlk-drive/
Information will be provided on safe cycling, scheduled group rides, other Bike Month events, and Indego Bike Share. We also want to take this time to gather stories about how you use a car-free MLK Drive.
Starting at 12pm a group ride will rolloff from the Formal Entrance to the Azalea Garden (Waterworks Dr & Fountain of the Seas Horses/Italian Fountain). The group will ride up Kelly Dr Recreational Path across Falls Bridge onto car-free MLK Dr and return. Total ride will be about 1.5 hours. Helmets are required. While there is no charge to ride, bikes and helmets are available for rent. The ride is one of the weekly Bicycle Club of Philadelphia Sunny Sunday Noon Rides.
Bicycles can be made available, in advance, for rolling or stationary interviews on MLK Dr or at your location. Interviews may be provided by ride leaders and attendees with permission.
