Oak Croak
Sudden oak death has claimed the lives of more than a million mature oaks and tan oaks in California over the past twenty years. After discovering an elusive healthy swath of forest in 2008, plant disease researchers are experimenting with preventive treatment that could remediate the impact of the disease, therefore preserving the shade, acorns and habitat oaks provide. On July 14, the Ford Foundation hosted The Just City: A Ford Forum on Metropolitan Opportunity. The event marked the foundation’s 75th anniversary, and brought together thought leaders in metropolitan development to “explore how fairness, opportunity and equity can serve as defining features of this new era of urbanization.” Those in attendance included Van Jones of the Center for American Progress, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, and Joan Clos of UN-HABITAT, a UN program that promotes socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development. Meat Eater’s Guide
The Environmental Working Group recently released The Meat Eater’s Guide: Educating People to Change Habits, a guide on the environmental impact of 20 types of conventionally (not organically) raised meat, dairy, and vegetable proteins.
