Wildlife Clinic Volunteer Training

As the only licensed wildlife rehabilitation clinic in the city of Philadelphia, the Wildlife Clinic at the Schuylkill Center takes in thousands of sick, injured, and orphaned animals each year. Our small team of clinic staff relies on the support of dedicated Wildlife Clinic volunteers to care for native small mammals, birds, raptors, reptiles, and amphibians. Start on your path to become one of our dedicated Wildlife Clinic volunteers in 2025 at one of our five available training sessions! Volunteer Training Requirements Before starting work in the clinic, volunteers must attend a training session, submit a volunteer waiver and application,

Toad Detour Training (Virtual)

Learn how to protect our toads! Toad Detour protects the local toad population as they migrate to and from their breeding grounds each spring. When the toads emerge from brumation (the reptile version of hibernation) in the early spring, hundreds of them cross Port Royal, Hagy’s Mill and other nearby roads to mate in the Roxborough Reservoir or the Schuylkill Center’s ponds. Toad Detour season runs from March 1st to June 30th. On select nights, when the conditions are just right, Toad Detour volunteers erect barricades and help divert traffic during busy toad crossing evenings, saving hundreds of toads. This

Help us to improve the health and biodiversity of our forest while getting to know our vast, 365 acres of protected land! This is a great opportunity for those who are looking to learn more about plant identification and restoration techniques while connecting with nature and other members of your community. Together, we will work to remove invasive plant species and improve our trails. No experience is necessary. We recommend wearing long pants and sturdy boots and bringing a pair of gloves if you have them available. We will have a selection of gloves if needed, along with tools, water

January is great time of year for bird watching here at the Schuylkill Center. On February 8 we’re inviting birders to help us collect data for our annual Winter Bird Census! Help monitor the abundance of bird species that winter in our forests and fields. All of the information we collect will be shared with other citizen scientists, helping us to better understand how our local bird populations change over time. Winter Bird Census

January is great time of year for bird watching here at the Schuylkill Center. On January 11 we’re inviting birders to help us collect data for our annual Winter Bird Census! When schools are closed, we are open! Keep curious young minds and busy bodies active with the Schuylkill Center Day Off Camp. Trained educators lead students grades K-6 on unique nature-themed explorations that take advantage of our science lab, Discovery Center, and 365 acres of beautiful wooded trails, streams, and ponds. Please bring a packed lunch, water bottle and an extra set of clothes. Wear weather-appropriate clothing that can get dirty. Space is limited to 30 campers. Sign up early to guarantee your spot. Solstice Celebration

Celebrate the winter solstice at the Schuylkill Center. Make winter wreaths and other crafts with Rose Hammerman of Philadelphia Free Range Education. Then explore the trails during a sunset hike led by Schuylkill Center neighbor and Kripalu-Certified Mindful Outdoor Guide, Molly Frieberg. We will warm up in the cold with music, hot chocolate, fresh air, and good company galore.
