Get ready for hands-on, nature-filled fun for our littlest explorers! Led by partner Felicia Acconciamessa, an educator with Riverbend Environmental Education Center, this preschool-friendly, nature-based program includes a story, art, nature activity, and a “hike” around the garden. Join artist Henry Martin for this four-session class designed for anyone who enjoys the natural world and wants to explore it more deeply through drawing. This is a basic drawing class based on nature highlighting—but not limited to—trees. The first week will focus on paying attention to our perceptions through common artists’ exercises. In the second week, we’ll analyze the structure of the plants we will draw. The remaining weeks will allow us to explore the fun and joy we can experience with drawing, with opportunities for self-directed focus and subjects. Series Dates: October 7, 14, 21, & 28 required
Most people are familiar with the innumerable benefits of living trees. But, even after their death, trees provide vital habitat, shelter, and food for wildlife. Join us as we learn how dead and dying trees still teem with life, from tiny termites to fantastic flying squirrels and everything in between. Mindful birding combines observing birds with mindfulness techniques, creating a practice that incorporates heightened awareness. Labeling or identifying birds is not the primary focus. Instead, the intention is to slow down and notice the world around us, using birds as our guides. During this guided experience, you’ll practice simple mindfulness exercises to engage sensory awareness while intentionally tuning into the birds surrounding you. Spend some time during the slower pace of summer exploring the natural beauty of Stoneleigh. During this workshop, we’ll make quick forays from Stoneleigh’s air-conditioned Pool House into the gardens, noting the lush beauty of the plants in the height of the growing season. We’ll return to the oasis of the Pool House to write, taking inspiration from the adjacent gardens, which include bog gardens flanked by arborvitae, white pines, and hemlocks. Join us to revel in the final days of August with reading, writing, and some cool drinks. The Savoy Company returns for their annual summer performance presenting the hilarious one-act show that launched Gilbert and Sullivan’s career: Trial By Jury. Pauline Oliveros’ (1932-2016) life as a composer, performer and humanitarian was about opening her own and others’ sensibilities to the universe and facets of sounds. Her career spanned fifty years of boundary dissolving music making. In the ’50s, she was part of a circle of iconoclastic composers, artists, and poets gathered in San Francisco. In the ’60s, she influenced American music profoundly through her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth, and ritual.

Come enjoy a festive gathering while learning to make holiday ornaments from natural materials. From seed pods to feathers, beech nuts to pinecones, gardens can be a great source of materials for seasonal decorations. Learn how to develop your creative eye for using these natural materials and turn them into something sustainably beautiful under the guidance of Stoneleigh staff. Participants will make 3 to 4 ornaments during the workshop to take home. All materials provided. Bring your own pruners or snips. This class will be held indoors at the Pool House.

Using yarn made from natural materials, you will create three ornaments to bring holiday cheer to your home or gift to a loved one. This workshop is for experienced crocheters. Join natural dyer and textile artist Laura Hricko for a hands-on workshop at Stoneleigh, where the surrounding landscape will serve as both inspiration and resource. Using locally grown and native dye flowers and foliage, this workshop will guide you through the natural dye technique known as “eco-printing” to create either a set of two linen napkins or an organic cotton bandana and silk scarf. As we work, we’ll discuss the fundamentals of natural dyeing, including fiber preparation, plant selection, and the unique qualities of plant dyes.

The Safer Steps program focuses on fall prevention.
