  • Highlights of Tyler North

    FOR ADULTS AND YOUTH AGES 12-17 A leisurely-paced tour with a bit of Tyler history, collection highlights, shaded woods, and sunny gardens. Join Tyler docent Woody Kotch on this tour through Tyler’s magnolia, lilac, and crabapple collections. Then stroll through the cool, shaded Native Woodland Walk for some discussion of the local ecology and how climate change may affect this environment. We will continue with a stop at Lucille’s Garden to see what edibles are looking good this year and chat about water management at Tyler.   • Explore the North Woods

    FOR ALL AGES Meet Tyler docent and Pennsylvania Master Naturalist in training Dave Charlton for an hour-long guided hike in a hidden corner of Tyler. Tall trees, fungi, native plants and bird song are all there to see and hear. In September, we will observe changes to the flora and fauna of the forest as the seasons transition from the bounty of summer to the shorter, cooler days of fall. About your guide: Dave is a long-time Tyler volunteer and naturalist. He is a founding member of our docent program and has recently completed training in the PA Master Naturalist program.

  • Pollinator Walk

    FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN AGES 8-17 Explore the diverse world of insects and pollinators! Join naturalist Sam Nestory on this leisurely walk as we concentrate on the fascinating community of insects living in Tyler’s meadows and gardens. Be prepared to look closely as we search for insects that depend on these plants for food, shelter and nesting material. As we identify them, we will discuss their fascinating life cycles and strategies for survival.   • Painter History Tour

    FOR ADULTS & YOUTH AGES 12-17 Join us for a glimpse into the past as we share the stories of the Minshall, Painter, and Tyler families. Learn how they used the land and the buildings, including Lachford Hall, Painter Library, Springhouse, Fruit Vault, and Greenhouse. The legacy of trees left by the Painter brothers is included as we follow this Quaker family through the last 263 years on this land. All youth must be accompanied by an adult.     FOR ALL AGES Bring your family and meet your friends for a cozy, after-hours adventure through our scenic gardens, where nature’s beauty meets the warmth of community. Take a stroll through the beautiful gardens during the crisp fall evening, grab food and drinks, visit our four photo-op stations and the large art display in the barn, take a walk through Tyler history, and check out the harvest season in our edible garden.   • Weekend Warm-up Hike: NEW Wister Walk

    The Weekend Warm-up Hike is back! Start your Friday off right with a brisk, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas within the deer exclusion fence. The Weekend Warm-up Hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles. However, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers as we explore both familiar areas of the Arboretum and “hidden gems.” Be prepared for a mix of asphalt, gravel and natural surfaces. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. We recommend bringing along a reusable water bottle. Please

    FOR ALL AGES Meet the animals! Bring the whole family for our daytime version of our popular Nature at Night program. You don’t have to go to another country or a zoo to see exciting animals; we have them right here in our backyards! In this program, you’ll meet animals from Pennsylvania and learn why they are worthy of some hometown pride. Live animals and taxidermy mounts highlight this exciting experience. Participants learn what behaviors and adaptations are unique to each species and then see the critters up close.     FOR ADULTS 18+ ONLY Experience the Arboretum after dark! Nighttime offers a different perspective of the Arboretum.     FOR ALL AGES Please join In Color Birding Club as they explore Tyler Arboretum. The outing is on Saturday, November 4, from 8-11 am. In Color Birding Club encourages the accessibility and welcoming of Black and brown folks into birding. With acres of unbroken forest interior and extensive meadows, Tyler is recognized by the Pennsylvania Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area. Bring your own binoculars and be prepared to walk on all types of surfaces.     FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17 Over three centuries ago, Jacob Minshall built the homestead “Round Top” after relocating to Middletown with his family. Join us as we make our way through Ridley Creek State Park to visit what remains of the original homestead. We will learn about the site’s history and hear an account of what life was like for the last residents of Round Top.   • Witch Hazel Winter Fireworks Tour

    FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17 Do you know that Tyler has a collection of over 100 witch hazels that spark in bloom colors of gold, red, purple, yellow, and orange in February? On any given day during this time, the intoxicating perfume of this tree will surely attract most garden visitors to their locations.
