  • Explore the North Woods

    FOR ALL AGES Meet Tyler docent and Pennsylvania Master Naturalist in training Dave Charlton for an hour-long guided hike in a hidden corner of Tyler. Tall trees, fungi, native plants and bird song are all there to see and hear. In September, we will observe changes to the flora and fauna of the forest as the seasons transition from the bounty of summer to the shorter, cooler days of fall. About your guide: Dave is a long-time Tyler volunteer and naturalist. He is a founding member of our docent program and has recently completed training in the PA Master Naturalist program.

    FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN AGES 8-17 Explore the diverse world of insects and pollinators! Join naturalist Sam Nestory on this leisurely walk as we concentrate on the fascinating community of insects living in Tyler’s meadows and gardens. Be prepared to look closely as we search for insects that depend on these plants for food, shelter and nesting material. As we identify them, we will discuss their fascinating life cycles and strategies for survival.   • Painter History Tour

    FOR ADULTS & YOUTH AGES 12-17 Join us for a glimpse into the past as we share the stories of the Minshall, Painter, and Tyler families. Learn how they used the land and the buildings, including Lachford Hall, Painter Library, Springhouse, Fruit Vault, and Greenhouse. The legacy of trees left by the Painter brothers is included as we follow this Quaker family through the last 263 years on this land. All youth must be accompanied by an adult.   • Weekend Warm-up Hike: NEW Wister Walk

    The Weekend Warm-up Hike is back! Start your Friday off right with a brisk, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas within the deer exclusion fence. The Weekend Warm-up Hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles. However, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers as we explore both familiar areas of the Arboretum and “hidden gems.” Be prepared for a mix of asphalt, gravel and natural surfaces. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. We recommend bringing along a reusable water bottle. Please

    FOR ALL AGES Meet the animals! Bring the whole family for our daytime version of our popular Nature at Night program. You don’t have to go to another country or a zoo to see exciting animals; we have them right here in our backyards! In this program, you’ll meet animals from Pennsylvania and learn why they are worthy of some hometown pride. Live animals and taxidermy mounts highlight this exciting experience. Participants learn what behaviors and adaptations are unique to each species and then see the critters up close.     FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17 Over three centuries ago, Jacob Minshall built the homestead “Round Top” after relocating to Middletown with his family. Join us as we make our way through Ridley Creek State Park to visit what remains of the original homestead. We will learn about the site’s history and hear an account of what life was like for the last residents of Round Top.     Join Tyler Arboretum’s Introduction to Beekeeping Program for a hands-on deep dive into managing honeybee colonies throughout the entire beekeeping season. Gain real-world experience as part of a small, supportive cohort of students under the guidance of Tyler’s lead volunteer beekeeper, Paul Strommer. Colonies are collaboratively managed by the class, enabling the entire group to learn from the challenges faced by some colonies and share in the success of others.     FOR ALL AGES Dismal Run has been designated the cleanest stream in Delco, and it flows right through Tyler Arboretum! Join Tyler’s Executive Director, Mike Skuja, as we explore a tributary of Dismal Run along the Blue Trail. Mike will discuss the significance of riparian buffers and stormwater management solutions. We will also observe the impact of the emerald ash borer and learn about forest management practices implemented in response to the ash tree crisis, as well as upcoming restoration initiatives. In this workshop, we’ll visit Tyler Arboretum’s Pollinator Preserve to observe pollinators in action. You’ll learn about their lifecycle, why they’re important, and what you can do to help them. These walks are for those who have a love of plants and their role in ecology or for those who want to learn more.     FOR ALL AGES Are you new to Tyler or a visitor who has never explored the trails outside the deer fence? Join Tyler docent Dave Charlton for a monthly series of leisurely walks on the Tyler Trails. We will spend one to one and a half hours learning to find our way in the natural areas while discovering seasonal changes in the landscape and the flora and fauna that inhabit it.     FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17 In the first half of the 20th century, the American chestnut tree was all but eliminated from the forests of eastern North America by an imported fungal disease, commonly known as chestnut blight. In cooperation with the American Chestnut Foundation, Tyler Arboretum is host to a preservation orchard where surviving examples of this tree are raised and bred as part of the conservation effort to restore this iconic tree to eastern forests.
