Meeting at the Houston Playgound Over the past two years, FOW has worked with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation to plant hundreds of native trees and shrubs in the wooded ravine of Houston Meadow. These plants not only provide necessary habitat to our wildlife, but also helps with erosion control. On this Saturday, we’ll be completing the important task of maintaining these plantings by removing invasive vines, fixing deer browse protection fencing, and more! No experience is needed. The 37th Annual AIDS Walk Philly continues to serve as the region’s largest HIV/AIDS fundraiser. Philadelphians can be a lifeline for their neighbors and loved ones by participating in the AIDS Walk Philly 5K, raising public awareness and funds for those living with HIV disease in our community. In partnership with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and Fairmount Park Conservancy, Park Friends Groups across the city will be hosting volunteer events the weekend of November 10th - 12th for Love Your Park Fall Weekend 2023. Over 90 Philly parks need help planting trees and flower bulbs, collecting leaves for compost, and cleaning up after a busy summer season.

Toad Detour Training

Learn how to protect our toads! Toad Detour protects the local toad population as they migrate to and from their breeding grounds each spring. When the toads emerge from brumation (the reptile version of hibernation) in the early spring, hundreds of them cross Port Royal, Hagy’s Mill and other nearby roads to mate in the Roxborough Reservoir or the Schuylkill Center’s ponds. Toad Detour season runs from March 1st to June 30th. On select nights, when the conditions are just right, Toad Detour volunteers erect barricades and help divert traffic during busy toad crossing evenings, saving hundreds of toads. This
