    Bartram’s Garden Barn

    Ars Nova Workshop invites you to Another Space, Another Time- a partnership between Ars Nova Workshop, Spirits Up!, and Bartram’s Garden exploring music, movement, and mindfulness. This program is a space led by yoga teacher Sudan Green, a certified movement and mindfulness teacher dedicated to making these practices more accessible to communities that need them most. It is an ode to the ancestors like Milford Graves who gathered communities around whole wellness- movement, mindfulness, and expression.     BlackStar presents a site-specific, newly commissioned performance series and installation at Bartram’s Garden, from artist Joiri Minaya. Curated by writer and editor Dessane Lopez Cassell, the series will reflect on the intertwined legacies of freedom, extraction, and ecology in North America’s oldest surviving botanical garden.   • SWWAG Workshop: Elderberry Syrup Making

    Mill Creek Farm 4901 Brown St, Philadelphia, PA

    Instructor Yam Vallis will lead folks in an Afro-Herbalism workshop on the history of the Elderberry plant and the making of syrup. Participants will have a chance to take home elderberry syrup, but we will also make large batches, with the intention of distributing the rest, with a focus on Philly’s Black community and herbal hubs like Black Bird Rising.

This demonstration highlights the current depletion of the city’s soil and shows how composting can restore its vitality—producing dark, fertile earth capable of growing nutritious fruits and vegetables that support optimal health. The Philadelphia Farm Service Agency(FSA) will also be tabling during the event to share USDA resources for urban growers. County Executive Director Nina Berryman will speak to participants about the FSA and answer any questions. She can discuss farm numbers, youth loans, and other financial safety net programs the FSA

Please feel free to bring a snack. Designed for toddlers and preschoolers, ages 2-4. One adult chaperone is required for every two children. Equipment, life jackets, and basic instruction for kayaking and row boating provided–first-come, first-served. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. May be canceled in the event of inclement weather or unsafe river conditions. This program will be offered weekly from 10am—2pm in May, June, and September.   • SWWAG Workshop: Trellis and Protect Your Garden

    Sankofa Community Farm at Bartram’s Garden 5400 Lindbergh Blvd, Philadelphia, PA

    Come learn how to build trellising for fruits and veggies to give them more room to grow, as well as protect your garden from pests. This trellis workshop is for beginner and intermediate gardeners looking to deepen their knowledge about gardening techniques. We will focus on trellising and explore why, how, and which plants benefit from trellising.  We will also explore what style of trellis is most beneficial based on the plant itself.
