Many people have heard an owl, but few have ever seen one. Mt. Cuba’s varied landscapes and topography provide the ideal habitats for three of Delaware’s native owl species – the barred, great horned, and Eastern screech – and winter is the best time to spot them roosting in our trees. Owls are nocturnal so join us as we search for them just after dusk. Following a brief introductory lecture, we’ll head into the garden and listen for their unique calls. Dress for the weather. After performing examples of Brazilian music and presenting historic, geographical and educational references, they introduce Brazil’s famous festival Carnaval, demonstrating authentic Brazilian percussion instruments - surdo, tamborim, repinique, agogô, reco-reco, ganzá, pandeiro, and cuíca. In Summer 2024, we learned of a potential chemical contamination originating at a privately owned site adjacent to Bartram’s Garden and the Bartram’s Mile Trail. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health and our independent test results, most park users are at very low risk for exposure. The impacted site is a privately owned industrial property and is not an area of public access. The property owner is required to hold a public meeting about the contamination. All are welcome.
