About the Exhibition: Da Vinci Art Alliance is proud to partner with Craft Movie Club to present “Materialize,” an exhibition that showcases sixteen artists, all working in their chosen material of ceramics, wood, fiber, metal and glass to respond to James Whale’s 1933 classic, “The Invisible Man.” In the film, scientist Jack Griffin uses an extraction from an obscure flower—originally used to bleach textiles—to render himself invisible. How, “Materialize” asks, do the artists on display mirror the scientist at the heart of the film? How do they manipulate the natural world to transform their raw materials into powerful, symbolic objects?

Many people have heard an owl, but few have ever seen one. Mt. Cuba’s varied landscapes and topography provide the ideal habitats for three of Delaware’s native owl species – the barred, great horned, and Eastern screech – and winter is the best time to spot them roosting in our trees. Owls are nocturnal so join us as we search for them just after dusk. Following a brief introductory lecture, we’ll head into the garden and listen for their unique calls. Dress for the weather. Join Historic Rittenhouse Town for Tavern Night! Outside the church, the tavern was the most important institution in most towns. Taverns were used for political assemblies, markets, and, of course, a place to enjoy a good meal and learn the news of the day. Come join us as the buildings and grounds of our historic 18th-century homestead are transformed into a tavern from the 1770s, where the simple pleasures of good food, drink, and fellowship collide. Tavern Night will feature an evening of storytelling and merriment, complete with 18th-century beer and cocktails and hearth-cooked food prepared in our Bake House.
Make your own ink for drawing and fine writing from natural materials using plants growing in our green spaces and simple ingredients found in your kitchen! Bottle experiences of connection with natural places and experiment with your own plant-based ink in this workshop. You will leave this workshop with a bottle of your own handmade botanical ink; a reference zine on ink making; a collection of your own drawings and ink samples; and knowledge to create your own collection of natural inks from homegrown and foraged botanicals. In Object Memory, artists Jen Blazina and Ashley Catharine Smith collect, mend, and reinterpret objects—some inherited from family, others discarded by strangers—to explore how heirlooms become mythic, shaping our understanding of the past, each other, and ourselves. By turns playful and poignant, their charged objects evoke cherished memories and honor past lives while grappling with intergenerational trauma and the ever-shifting nature of the stories we pass along generation after generation.
Creative Conversations (CC) is a program bringing emerging and established artists together to engage in conversation in a welcoming and relaxed environment. CC is an opportunity to meet with artists who work in various mediums and talk about the joys, struggles, inspirations, and technical issues artists deal with throughout their creative journey. Participants have the opportunity to share their work and receive sensitive and useful feedback from the visiting artist. Welsh Road Library will host Minas for a small music program. Minas introduces students to the country of Brazil through its music, Samba and Bossa Nova. After performing examples of Brazilian music and presenting historic, geographical and educational references, they introduce Brazil’s famous festival Carnaval, demonstrating authentic Brazilian percussion instruments - surdo, tamborim, repinique, agogô, reco-reco, ganzá, pandeiro, and cuíca. Participation is enhanced by engaging students to sing in Portuguese (the language of Brazil), scat, and play Brazilian samba percussion (instruments supplied). Students learn while being engaged and having fun.

Visible mending is an art of repair and sentimentality. Whether you’re interested in offsetting the negative effects of fast fashion, preserving meaningful objects, or simply enjoy the meditative act of sewing and embroidering, this workshop will provide a space for you to do so. This three-hour workshop is a place to commune, connect and share with others as you learn mending techniques for reviving old clothes, linens, and fabrics.
