Mother Nature’s tease of spring-like weather probably has you ready to swap your gloves and snow shovels for gardening supplies. But while winter is still sticking for a few more weeks, it’s never too early to start planning your gardening.
Throughout the month of February local gardening gurus are holding a number of workshops teaching everything from seed starting to composting to orchard growing. Saturday, February 4
- Amending Your Soil Workshop (12 – 2 p.m.) Learn how to amend your garden soil and get your beds ready for spring. Greensgrow Farm, 2501 E. Cumberland St.
- Worm Composting Collective (12 – 2 p.m.) Build your own worm-bin and learn how to care for your new compost pets. Pre-Registration required. $20 for members $30 for non-members. Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, 8480 Hagy’s Mill Rd.

- PSU Master Gardeners: Vermicomposting (9 – 11 a.m.) Learn how create and maintain in-home worm composting. $10 registration fee. Fairmount Park Horticultural Center, North Horticultural Drive & Montgomery Ave.
- Intro to Orchids (1 – 2 p.m.) Join Margie Robbins, the Primex “Orchid Guru”, for a class on how to grow and care for these unique plants. $10 registration fee due in advance. Primex Garden Center, 435 West Glenside Ave., Glenside, Pa.

- Rainwater as a Resource (10 – 11 a.m.) Learn what you can do to reduce runoff and what to do with the runoff water that lands and gathers on your roofs, lawns and gardens. $10 registration fee due in advance. Primex Garden Center, 435 West Glenside Ave., Glenside, Pa.
- Seed Starting Workshop (12 – 2 p.m.) Greensgrow’s farming and sustainable programs Manager will teach you how to choose the correct seeds, equipment and location for starting your garden. Must register by 5 p.m. on February 16. Greensgrow Farm (2501 East Cumberland St.)

- Crop Planning and Garden Layout (11– 1p.m.) Join fellow gardeners and explore new ways to design and enhance your garden. $8 registration fee is required for Greener Partners members. The Longview Center, 3215 Stump Rd., Collegeville, Pa.
- Growing Berries, Brambles and Grapes (1 – 2 p.m.) Primex’s staff will teach how to care for blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, grapes and more. Learn how to prune and defend against disease. Primex Garden Center, 435 West Glenside Ave., Glenside, Pa.
