Philadelphia-based Kitchen Garden Textiles, which sells napkins, towels, aprons and even coffee filters produced from sustainable fiber sources such as linen and reclaimed cotton, will provide table linens for Outstanding in the Field, a national “roving restaurant without walls,” according to its website, which holds dinners on long communal tables in outdoor settings such as farm fields and orchards as a way to connect diners with the land and the people who produce their food.
The partnership will begin at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, where Outstanding in the Field will set up their long table for a seventh time.
Kitchen Garden Textiles founder Heidi Barr, who has a background in costume design, started off making napkins out of secondhand men’s shirts and selling them to raise funds for Henry Got Crops, the urban farm where she buys food.
Today Kitchen Garden Textiles offers a variety of products and has worked with a Pennsylvania mill to produce fabric made from a blend of linen and hemp fiber. The company donates 40% of its gross profits from its linen grocery bags to Philadelphia urban farms.
Philadelphia area residents who can’t make it to Coachella can check out Outstanding in the Fields tour dates for other locations, including FarmerJawn in Elkins Park in September.
Restaurants and households can also rent Barr’s linens for their own tables and phase out their use of disposable napkins, or reusable napkins that shed microplastics in the wash.
