We’ll be staying on the north side of Bells Mill Road, walking in Andorra Natural Area, and on the Orange Trail on the east side of Wissahickon Creek. Our route includes both loops in Andorra Meadow and the wooded area and passes the benches of 3 special people. We’ll see the remnants of the nursery Andorra once was and look for signs of emerging Spring. We may even try out

Meeting at Northwestern Avenue and Forbidden Drive Ever walk past a structure in the Wissahickon and observe a cornerstone with the initials WPA and a date? WPA is short for the Works Progress Administration, a federal New Deal program during the Great Depression that helped provide jobs for unemployed workers. Fairmount Park and the Wissahickon Valley were sites for multiple WPA projects and some controversy. Join us for a loop walk that includes stops at several structures built by WPA workers. We’ll share highlights, some history about the buildings, and the controversy about the scope of work in the Wissahickon.

The meadow and surrounding forest are bursting with activity, from the blossoming trees to the increased presence of birds. We’ll observe the changes from our fall and winter walks, and welcome the new season! As we walk up to the meadow, we will pass the Treehouse, food forest, and frog pond and will enjoy the extended sunlight with this late afternoon hike. Meet at Northwestern Ave. Kiosk on Forbidden Drive Hike the trails of the Andorra Natural Area and search for remaining plants and signs of the Andorra Nurseries-once the largest nursery on the east coast. We’ll look for rows of lined-out trees, walk old nursery roads, discover exotic and old specimen trees. Well behaved dogs are permitted.
