American Chestnut Tour

FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 14-17 In the first half of the 20th century, the American chestnut tree was all but eliminated from the forests of eastern North America by an imported fungal disease, commonly known as chestnut blight. In cooperation with the American Chestnut Foundation, Tyler Arboretum is host to a preservation orchard where surviving examples of this tree are raised and bred as part of the conservation effort to restore this iconic tree to eastern forests. What’s the Buzz? An Insect & Pollinator Walk

FOR ALL AGES Join naturalist Sam Nestory on this leisurely walk as we concentrate on the fascinating community of insects living in Tyler’s meadows and gardens. Be prepared to look closely as we search for insects that depend on these plants for food, shelter and nesting material. As we identify them, we will discuss their fascinating life cycles and strategies for survival. This leisurely-paced walk is for all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Richard’s Rambles: South Farm & Serpentine Barrens

FOR ADULTS (18+) AND YOUTH AGES 15+ This Ramble will explore the fields of South Farm, passing by the Wister Specimen Tree Collection, the American Chestnut Nursery, and the ruins of the old German-style barn of this tenant farm. Then it’s on to the serpentine barrens, where we expect to find silverrod, goldenrod, and other fall-blooming wildflowers, including the globally rare serpentine aster. Early Morning Owl Prowl

For Adults 18+ and Youth ages 15-17 We will be hiking out with guide David Eberly to see owls in the Pinetum, as well as some areas outside the deer exclusion fence. We’ll be on the lookout for Great Horned, Screech, and Barred Owls. Bluebird Nesting Box Tour

FOR ALL AGES For more than fifty years, volunteers at Tyler Arboretum have been monitoring the nesting activities of the Eastern Bluebird.  Please join us on this family-friendly tour to share this tradition.  We will walk the succession field and check on quite a few bluebird boxes.  We expect to see bluebirds, active nests of bluebirds and other cavity-nesting birds, eggs, and young nestlings!  We will be walking on grassy fields, so bug spray is recommended. Explore the North Woods

FOR ALL AGES Meet Tyler docent and Pennsylvania Master Naturalist in training Dave Charlton for an hour-long guided hike in a hidden corner of Tyler. Tall trees, fungi, native plants and bird song are all there to see and hear. In September, we will observe changes to the flora and fauna of the forest as the seasons transition from the bounty of summer to the shorter, cooler days of fall. Weekend Warm-up Hike: NEW Wister Walk

The Weekend Warm-up Hike is back! Start your Friday off right with a brisk, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas within the deer exclusion fence. The Weekend Warm-up Hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles. However, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers as we explore both familiar areas of the Arboretum and “hidden gems.” Be prepared for a mix of asphalt, gravel and natural surfaces. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. Witch Hazel Winter Fireworks Tour

It’s easy to add fresh herbs to your meals when you have a pot of culinary herbs growing near your kitchen. Learn about growing herbs in this interactive workshop led by Tyler Senior Gardener Bess Trout. Experts guide you in selecting and planting herbs in a container to take home and enjoy. Once home, these pots can thrive on their own or be placed into a larger container. Bring a clean, quart-sized planter with drainage holes. Instructions, soil, and seeds will be provided. Check-in

Early Morning Owl Prowl

For Adults and Teens ages 15-17 We will be hiking out with guide Sarah Boucas Neto to see owls in the Pinetum, as well as some areas inside the deer exclusion fence. We’ll be on the lookout for Great Horned, Screech, and Barred Owls. Less likely but always possible are Saw-whet and Long-eared owls. Listening to owls calling in the starlight is an experience not to be missed. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Introduction to Beekeeping Program (Series)

Join Tyler Arboretum’s Introduction to Beekeeping Program for a hands-on deep dive into managing honeybee colonies throughout the entire beekeeping season. Gain real-world experience as part of a small, supportive cohort of students under the guidance of Tyler’s lead volunteer beekeeper, Paul Strommer. Colonies are collaboratively managed by the class, enabling the entire group to learn from the challenges faced by some colonies and share in the success of others. This class will include honey extraction if beekeeping activities are successful enough, and a portion of the honey will be shared with participants. SUITABLE FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17 Experience the magic of Tyler at night! Join guides Dick Cloud and John Bunting on this hike under the light of the nearly full moon. Hiking at night is a unique sensory experience. We will use our senses of hearing, smell, and touch to navigate the North Woods. We will observe the moon as we walk through the meadows and more open areas of the Arboretum. Our guide will share points of special interest and seasonal highlights. FOR ADULTS AND YOUTH AGES 12-17 Discover the mysteries of the night sky! Join us for a night of stargazing with members of the Chester County Astronomical Society. Telescopes will be available for public viewing, but feel free to bring your equipment. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned stargazer, this event promises to expand your knowledge of the cosmos. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Dress for the weather and bring a flashlight. Feel free to bring a lawn chair for added comfort. Binoculars and telescopes are welcome. The Native Woodland Walk at Tyler highlights the beauty of the woodlands of Southeastern Pennsylvania and showcases some of our native species that thrive and enhance home gardens. Leaders from the local BCDC bird club will guide this leisurely-paced morning walk, looking for a variety of resident and migratory bird species amid forest and meadow habitats.
