Join us for a lively discussion of Philadelphia, a Narrative History, written by U.S. political, economic, and diplomatic history expert Dr. Paul Kahan. The book presents an in-depth portrait of Philadelphia and explores the tension between diversity and conflict in the city’s early years and onward. Tickets are $10/person, free for members. Cavin Jones is a painter, muralist, and collagist whose figurative work is inspired by American history, particularly the African American experience. Jones has said that his work is "a catalyst to stimulate thought and promote discussion about various issues prevalent in society." His dynamic compositions often feature contrasting elements that as he says, "infuse the paintings with layers of meaning and associations." Join us for an illuminating conversation between curators from two of America's most distinguished art institutions as part of PAFA's landmark exhibition A Nation of Artists. Dr. Lea Stephenson, Kenneth R. Woodcock Curator of Historical American Art at PAFA, and Kerry Bickford, Associate Curator at the Brandywine Museum of Art, explore how American artists have depicted landscapes—from the Hudson River School's sublime vistas to the Brandywine tradition's intimate terrain, and contemporary artists reimagining these spaces today.
