DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Legacy of Albert “Al” Gury (October 23rd\, 1951 – June 25th\, 2026)\nPAFA is honored to present Al Gury: Painting and Purpose\, an exhibition celebrating the legacy of the beloved painter\, educator\, author\, advocate\, and friend. \nFor more than 38 years\, Al shaped the life of PAFA with extraordinary dedication\, generosity\, and care. A PAFA alumnus and Cresson Traveling Scholarship recipient\, he returned to the Academy as a teacher and became one of its most enduring voices in painting\, drawing\, figure drawing\, anatomy\, art history\, and art education. \nAs Chair of Painting from 2000 to 2022\, Al helped guide generations of artists through the discipline\, rigor\, and poetry of the studio. He believed deeply in the power of art education\, not only as technical training\, but as a way of helping students discover who they were becoming. His influence extended far beyond the classroom through PAFA’s free After-School Studio Arts Program for Philadelphia-area high school students\, which he founded and directed\, opening the doors of art-making to young people across the city. PAFA’s own 2024 reflection on the program described Al as a Philadelphia-based artist\, educator\, and writer whose work explored harmony\, color\, composition\, and “visual poetry.” \nAl’s legacy also lives through his paintings\, his three books on painting and drawing\, his teaching at institutions across Philadelphia and beyond\, and his lifelong commitment to community\, advocacy\, and care. He gave quietly and generously\, encouraging students who needed support\, helping those struggling to afford supplies\, and believing in artists before they fully believed in themselves. \nThe exhibition includes a range of works that highlight is extensive painting career. SUMMARY:Historical Society of Franford November Meeting and Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Frankford today announced that HSF member and Revolutionary War historian Robert N. Fanelli will address its monthly meeting and lecture on Tuesday\, November 10 at the Society’s library/museum at 1507 Orthodox St\, Philadelphia. His topic will be Allen McLane at The Rocks\, in honor of the Semiquincentennial. A tale of the American Revolution widely known in the past but less so today\, early on the morning of June 8\, 1778\, Captain Allen McLane and his company of cavalry rode into a British ambush at the upper end of Frankford. Knowing the countryside well and “preferring death to being a prisoner”\, the patriot officer made a daring attempt to escape the trap. Fanelli will recount the skirmish\, relate its implications in the Revolution\, and locate the event in the present day Frankford landscape. \nFanelli is the Secretary of the Washington Crossing American Revolution Round Table\, a Trustee of the Swan Historical Foundation\, which owns an outstanding collection of Revolutionary era artifacts displayed at Washington Crossing State Park in Titusville\, NJ\, and a contributor to the Journal of the American Revolution. His Revolutionary War biography\, “Lydia’s Tale: The Mystery of Lydia Darragh\, Irish Quaker\, Patriot Spy” will be available for purchase and signature. \nDoors open at 7:00 PM\, and the presentation begins at 7:30. It will also stream live on the HSF Facebook page. The event is free and open to the public. Free\, off street parking will be available across Orthodox Street at the Frankford Friends School. Light refreshments will be served before and after the presentation.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Legacy of Albert “Al” Gury (October 23rd\, 1951 – June 25th\, 2026)\nPAFA is honored to present Al Gury: Painting and Purpose\, an exhibition celebrating the legacy of the beloved painter\, educator\, author\, advocate\, and friend. \nFor more than 38 years\, Al shaped the life of PAFA with extraordinary dedication\, generosity\, and care. A PAFA alumnus and Cresson Traveling Scholarship recipient\, he returned to the Academy as a teacher and became one of its most enduring voices in painting\, drawing\, figure drawing\, anatomy\, art history\, and art education. \nAs Chair of Painting from 2000 to 2022\, Al helped guide generations of artists through the discipline\, rigor\, and poetry of the studio. This year we will raise a toast to two visionaries who have contributed significantly to the Wagner’s ongoing mission. We are proud to honor Edward (Ted) Daeschler\, Paleontologist\, Curator Emeritus\, & Professor Emeritus\, The Academy of Natural Sciences and Drexel University\, who has contributed greatly to the work of both The Academy of Natural Sciences\, the Wagner\, and the science of vertebrate paleontology. We are also thrilled to present the 2026 Louisa Binney Wagner Service Award to Anne Hollingsworth Arfaa\, Montessori educator and Wagner President Emerita.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Legacy of Albert “Al” Gury (October 23rd\, 1951 – June 25th\, 2026)\nPAFA is honored to present Al Gury: Painting and Purpose\, an exhibition celebrating the legacy of the beloved painter\, educator\, author\, advocate\, and friend. \nFor more than 38 years\, Al shaped the life of PAFA with extraordinary dedication\, generosity\, and care. A PAFA alumnus and Cresson Traveling Scholarship recipient\, he returned to the Academy as a teacher and became one of its most enduring voices in painting\, drawing\, figure drawing\, anatomy\, art history\, and art education. \nAs Chair of Painting from 2000 to 2022\, Al helped guide generations of artists through the discipline\, rigor\, and poetry of the studio. He believed deeply in the power of art education\, not only as technical training\, but as a way of helping students discover who they were becoming. His influence extended far beyond the classroom through PAFA’s free After-School Studio Arts Program for Philadelphia-area high school students\, which he founded and directed\, opening the doors of art-making to young people across the city. PAFA’s own 2024 reflection on the program described Al as a Philadelphia-based artist\, educator\, and writer whose work explored harmony\, color\, composition\, and “visual poetry.” \nAl’s legacy also lives through his paintings\, his three books on painting and drawing\, his teaching at institutions across Philadelphia and beyond\, and his lifelong commitment to community\, advocacy\, and care.
