  • Insect Safari for Kids

    Stoneleigh: a natural garden 1829 County Line Road, Villanova, Pennsylvania

    Bugs are all around us. Underground, in the air, underwater… they’re everywhere! Despite their small size, insects are among the most important animals on the planet, supporting our ecosystems from the ground up. Stoneleigh is home to many different insects, from tiny beetles to giant dragonflies.    Kids, grab your favorite adult and join us on an insect safari in the garden as we search for bugs of all sorts. We’ll learn about their fascinating relationships with plants, humans, and each other. Afterward, you’ll be ready to embark on an insect safari in your own backyard.

    Like discovering new cultural cuisine? Looking for a fun night out with friends? Enjoy a summer evening at the American Swedish Historical Museum to indulge in a Swedish specialty: crayfish! At one time the lakes of central Sweden were filled with crayfish, but overfishing decimated their population. Eventually, the government prohibited the catching of crayfish except for a short time in late summer. After going the whole summer without the delicacy, the return of crayfish to the dinner table in August became a great cause for celebration, a tradition that has continued through today.     Join us for a Free Family Day at the American Swedish Historical Museum, all about Norway! In conjunction with our balcony exhibit, Across the Atlantic: Sloopers and the First Organized Emigration from Norway to America, families can learn about Norwegian culture with craft activities throughout the Museum galleries. Try out Norwegian folk art including rosemaling and different styles of paper crafting, and experience some early Scandinavian Viking life by making your own Viking shield and dressing up like a Viking! Walk-ins are welcome but help us plan with your RSVP.
