This Wednesday, December 4, an evening-long fundraiser in support of Phase One of the Rail Park will be held at Union Transfer. Join Friends of the Rail Park for an extraordinary evening of entertainment filled with opportunities to learn more about the project. The evening starts at 6 p.m. with a cocktail party and fashion show hosted by WXPN’s Michaela Majoun. The reception will present a fashion show curated by Melissa D’Agostino featuring Arcadia, Commonwealth Proper, NINObrand by Bela Shehu and Bus Stop. Enjoy performances by Lux Arati (where fire meets belly dancing) and New Sound Brass (a miracle of 2 street). Catering is being donated by 13th Street Kitchens (Prohibition Tap Room, Café Lift and Bufad). If that is not enough entertainment for one evening, there is more to come.
Starting at 8:30 p.m. is a head turning line up of stellar performers engaging in collaborations that may never be seen again. The Walkmen, headlining the evening just days after announcing their “indefinite hiatus,” will be playing there hearts out one more time. To take it up a level, The Walkmen will be collaborating on a few songs with the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra led by the ever fierce 89 year old saxophonist Marshall Allen. Philadelphia’s own Birdie Busch and Light Heat will open up the evening, followed by a set with Sharon Van Etten , Chris Ward, Mary Lattimore and Jeff Zeigler. Just to make sure we are all paying attention, Baltimore hip-hop sensation Spank Rock will take to the stage with Sun Ra Arkestra backing him up prior to the Arkestra launching a set of their own. When Friends of the Rail Park have an idea, they think big and this evening shows it. Philadelphia is a place where big ideas can still take hold, and with Phase One ready to break ground in 2014, it is time to believe it.
