Here’s an exciting update! Mariposa Food Co-op will host a groundbreaking ceremony next week to kick-off the much anticipated $1 million renovation of the community-owned grocery’s new site.
GRID first shared news of the Co-op’s renovation back in November when it was announced that the grocery’s new spot at 4824 Baltimore Ave. would quintuple their current quaint store at 4726 Baltimore. In our January ’11 issue, we got the full scoop – at 5,500 square feet the new digs were originally home to the Belmont Trust Company; the entire expansion would cost a whopping $2.25 million; Re:Vision Architecture would be assisting with design elements – many of them energy-saving in nature; and once the new space opens non-members will be invited to shop. With this announcement, Mariposa is moving even closer to throwing open the doors of its new and improved home, and inviting eager community-members to fill their baskets with locally-produced and organic fare.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be attended by co-op staff and members, Mayor Nutter, and representative’s from local organization’s who have supported the renovation: The Reinvestment Fund (TRF), Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC), Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), and City of Philadelphia Commerce Department.
