Frog Call Night Hike

Join Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager, Susan Slawinski, for a guided hike along our trails on Friday, May 2 to look and listen for calling frogs and toads. Learn why these amphibians sing and how to identify species by their own unique sound. Dress for the weather with sturdy, close-toed shoes and be prepared to hike to some of the wetlands around the Schuylkill Center. $5 for Schuylkill Center Members / $10  for non-members. Garlic Mustard Harvest

Alliaria petiolata, better known as garlic mustard, is an invasive species that’s hard to miss in this area, so it’s up to us to make them disappear in the best way we know how – eat it! Explore the natural marvels of our 365-acre nature preserve on a guided hike led by an inspiring environmental educator. This free event is open to all ages. Walk-ins are welcome! This hike is about an hour long. Weather conditions can impact trail conditions, which are sometimes narrow or rocky.

Creative Movement Workshop with Silvana Cardell

The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education 8480 Hagys Mill Rd, Philadelphia, PA, United States

In this workshop geared toward family members of all ages, dancer and choreographer Silvana Cardell will lead participants in creative movement exercises. Participants will learn about Cardell’s current project, TERRA: Bodies and Territories, which explores the shared vulnerabilities between women’s bodies and the environment through the medium of dance. The workshop will guide participants in movements drawn from TERRA, exploring how their bodies relate to natural elements, mimicking growth, flow, resistance, and connection to the earth. The session will culminate in a choreographed dance piece. Registration is limited for this free workshop. Participants of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.

Restoration Workday

Help us to improve the health and biodiversity of our forest while getting to know our vast, 365 acres of protected land! This is a great opportunity for those who are looking to learn more about plant identification and restoration techniques while connecting with nature and other members of your community. Together, we will work to remove invasive plant species and improve our trails. No experience is necessary. We recommend wearing long pants and sturdy boots and bringing a pair of gloves if you have them available. We will have a selection of gloves if needed, along with tools, water

Day-Off Camp

The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education 8480 Hagys Mill Rd, Philadelphia, PA, United States

When schools are closed, we are open! Keep curious young minds and busy bodies active with the Schuylkill Center Day Off Camp. Trained educators lead students grades K-6 on unique nature-themed explorations that take advantage of our science lab, Discovery Center, and 365 acres of beautiful wooded trails, streams, and ponds. Please bring a packed lunch, water bottle and an extra set of clothes. Wear weather-appropriate clothing that can get dirty. Space is limited to 30 campers. Sign up early to guarantee your spot.
