The Bird Ethic – Opening Celebration

Artist-in-residence Susan Hagen’s solo exhibition, The Bird Ethic, is opening in our gallery and on our trails October 7th. Hagen’s diorama-inspired outdoor sculptures capture historical moments in bird conservation, bird science, and humankind’s impact on bird populations, guiding guests to take action to repair our interconnected world. At the opening, Hagen will lead a walk and talk about the outdoor exhibits. We will also have a hands-on art activity. The walk is wheelchair-accessible along our Widener Trail. Natural Dyeing with Riverside Plants I (BIPOC only)

In this workshop with LandLab artist-in-residence Bitter Kalli, participants will learn about spring and summer plants found along the Schuylkill River that can be used to create natural dyes. Participants will learn the fundamentals of natural dyeing and then naturally dye their own fabric. Participants are invited to bring their own items of clothing or fabric to dye, but it’s not required; we will provide dye materials and fabric. This event is specifically for people who identify as Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC). If you do not identify as BIPOC, please attend the second installment of this workshop

Volunteer: Toad Detour

The Toad Detour works to protect the local toad population as they migrate to and from their breeding grounds each spring. When the toads emerge from brumation (the reptile version of hibernation) in the early spring, hundreds of them cross Port Royal, Hagy’s Mill and other nearby roads to mate in the Roxborough Reservoir or the Schuylkill Center’s ponds. The Detour’s volunteers erect barricades and help divert traffic during busy toad crossing evenings, saving hundreds of toads from being hit by cars. You’re invited to celebrate the opening of a river is…, our first 2023 LandLab artist residency exhibition. LandLab is our immersive artist-in-residence program, providing artists or teams with resources and support to create innovative, site-specific installations or performative artworks. This year’s artists-in-residence, Bitter Officer-Narvasa and Yilu Jin, embarked on a textual and textural exploration of the Schuylkill River watershed. Weaving together memoir, research, and community-based practices, the artists used natural dyes and organic materials from riverbank plants to create textile pieces. Their work considers the legacies of neighborhood change and displacement along the Schuylkill and the increasing uncertainty of life

Meet us in the parking lot of Higher Ground Church at 7860 Eva Street to assist us in removing invasive plant species, clearing aggressive vines off native trees, and removing unwanted material. Restoration Volunteer Work Day

The new winter season begins at 4:47 p.m. on December 21. But what exactly happens at that moment? On a lively walk through a winter forest, Mike Weilbacher explains the science of the season, like why “solstice” translates as “sun standing,” why mistletoe and holly are symbols of the December holidays, why light is central to these holidays, where all the insects go, and why birds migrate. He’ll weave in legends and stories of solstice celebrations from many cultures that tried to explain winter, and we’ll be together at that magical moment when the sun stands still on the solstice.
