Design your own 2D or 3D felted fairy using fiber construction techniques including needle felting and sewing. All materials provided.Irish fairies are traditionally titled Aes Sídhe in gaelic or the Sidhe or Shee, which roughly translates as “the people of the mound.” In the spirit of the March 17 St. Patrick’s Day holiday, visitors are invited to create their own 2D and 3D fairies using needle felting, sewing, and a variety of fiber construction technique: methods including a standing figure or a flat frameable piece.Special guest teaching artist Jamie Campbell will demonstrate and guide participants through original 3D fairie construction.

Learn how to transform farm sourced fibers into an original garment. All materials included. All ages and abilities encouraged.Nuno felting is the process of making a new textile by combining a loose weave fabric with a natural fiber such as farm sourced mohair from goats or merino wool from sheep. Visitors will learn how to create textures in layers and create imagery in surface design in this no sew process.Workshop by studio 16 resident artist Bonnie MacAllister, M.Ed. who has studied textiles while on Fulbright-Hays to Ethiopia and on residence in Iceland and Lyon, France.

Learn bundle dye and flower pounding surface techniques to create an original organic cotton kerchief headband (one size)Using fresh and dried flowers, create an original surface design using a variety of botanical printing technique.Flower pounding, also known as tataki zome, isan ancient Japanese technique that uses flowers and plants to create prints on fabric or paper. The process involves pounding flowers with a hammer to release their natural dyes onto the material.Workshop takes place on the second floor in Studio 16. Hear from artists, scientists, historians for perspectives on the Freshwater exhibition.In the 19th century the pearl button industry obliterated freshwater mussel populations in the midwest, while in the northeast industrial pollution poisoned the Delaware River for a generation. Drawing on material histories and conservation science, Freshwater is a reflection on the compounding effects of industrial waste and overconsumption.
