    Join master beekeeper, Vincent Aloyo, for a talk about our friend the honey bee.Honey bees are key pollinators, enabling or enhancing food production. In gathering their own food, bees move pollen from flower to flower, allowing plants to produce seed-containing fruits (some of which we call vegetables). Although many bees and insects are efficient pollinators, Vincent Aloyo, Master Beekeeper, will explain the characteristics that make honey bees useful pollinators.   • Crafting Fire Cider: A Winter Herbal Remedy Workshop

    Learn the benefits of fire cider with Haverfarm Manager, Cassandra Brown.Fire Cider is an herbal tonic that has been used for generations during the colder months to support digestion, immune function, and respiratory wellness. This warming concoction is made by infusing apple cider vinegar with household ingredients such as garlic, ginger, onion, peppers, turmeric root, horseradish root, citrus, honey, and herbs. This workshop will cover the history of fire cider, the benefits of each ingredient, and explore ways to be creative and intentional in its creation. Every participant will go home with a personalized batch of fire cider in preparation

  • Winter Tree Identification Walk

    Join Brice Dorwart for an informational walk on campus. ISA CEUs are available for certified arborists!Join Brice Dorwart and arborist professionals as they explore the winter landscape and learn how to identify deciduous tree species without their leaves. Brice is an ISA-certified, local teaching arborist. This walk will be attended by Arboretum members and Davey Resource Group employees who work with PECO's vegetation management department. Wear good walking shoes and dress for the weather. If the weather is particularly bad the class will be rescheduled for Thursday, January 18th (same time). Participation in this class will count as 2 CEUs

  • Cavity-Nesting Bee Workshop

    Attend this workshop to learn all about the types of cavity-nesting bees with Jennie KellyJoin us for a workshop all about cavity-nesting bees in Pennsylvania. Several species of mason and leafcutter bees nest in small cavities. In this workshop we will learn about these species, their environmental impact, and how they build their homes. You can even help support this insect by installing a home in your backyard. We will go over the steps necessary to do so, and how to maintain the home.   • Garden Planning Workshop

    Plan the growing season with Haverfarm Manager, Cassandra Brown.It's time to whip out the seed catalogs and plan the 2024 Growing Season. The workshop will begin with a brief virtual presentation followed by an open design session where ALL levels of gardeners can get started on their plans. The presentation will cover garden design options, getting the most out of every season with crop rotation, and how to not get carried away with all the possibilities.
