Attend this virtual session to discuss Drawdown edited by Paul Hawken with the Arboretum staff.Join us to discuss Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming edited by Paul Hawken. This 2017 New York Times Bestseller offers 100 solutions to reverse global warming. In this book club session, we will discuss our perspectives on the book, and reading it prior is suggested. Join us for a walk through our sustainable campus landscape.Over the past few years, Haverford has been working hard to become a more sustainable campus and in 2021 and 2022 we were ranked #4 on the list of top ten zero-waste college campuses (created by the Post-Landfill Action Network - PLAN). Join us for a guided tour highlighting key pest and disease issues in Southeastern PA.We will walk a pre-scouted route of the Arboretum to showcase some key pest and disease issues common to Southeastern PA. Insect and mite issues will include hemlock woolly adelgid, spruce spider mite, white pine sheath mite, boxwood leafminer, boxwood mite, and various scales. We will also discuss the protection of pollinators and other beneficial insects through the proper use of registered products. This walk is cosponsored and led by Chris Ward of John B. Ward & Co. Join us for storytime led by Haverford Township Free Library!Join us for a delightful time of books and songs! This outdoor, in-person storytime will be held once a month during the summer at the Haverford College campus in front of the climbing tree (N 40° 00.534 W 075° 18.482) from 10:30 am-11:00 am. This storytime will be in lieu of Babies & Books and is tailored to children ages 0 to 5.Children need to be accompanied by a guardian while attending this program. This event will be canceled in the case of inclement weather. Registration is not required but by
Join us for a celebratory tree planting!In 2017 the Arboretum underwent a tree risk assessment that resulted in us having to remove approximately 500 trees from campus. We set a goal that within ten years we would plant two trees for each tree removed meaning that we would add an additional 1,000 trees to campus by 2027. We are happy to report that we have met that goal early and will be planting our 1,000th tree on Friday, June 16, 2023! Please join us in celebrating our accomplishment as we plant a Styrax obassia, fragrant snowbell, on Lloyd Green.

North zone horticulturist, Briar Maverick will lead the way in a hands-on pruning class!Summer is the time to prune many iconic spring-blooming shrubs, like azaleas and lilacs. Join Briar for a hands-on workshop to learn about summer pruning, as well as rejuvenation pruning for large or mature shrubs. Participation in the spring pruning workshop is not required to attend the summer session. This class is outdoors so please dress for the weather. Gloves and tools will be provided. If you have your own pruners, loppers, or handsaw that you would like to use please bring it along with you. Parking

Join Brice Dorwart for an informational walk on campus. ISA CEUs are available for certified arborists!Join Brice Dorwart and arborist professionals as they explore Haverford's summer landscape and learn how to identify deciduous tree species commonly found in the Philadelphia area. Brice is an ISA-certified, local teaching arborist. This walk will be attended by Arboretum members and Davey Resource Group employees who work with PECO's vegetation management department. Wear good walking shoes and dress for the weather. If the weather is particularly bad the class will be rescheduled for the following Thursday, July 20th (same times). Participation in this class
Join environmental educator, Rebecca Silvey, for a program for young learners ages 18 months to 3 years old.For young learners ages 18mo-3yrs and their favorite caregiver. We will sing songs, dance, and explore nature using our senses. Please bring a picnic blanket, sturdy footwear, sun protection, water, and anything else you need for you and your little one to feel comfortable. Tour our on-campus farm with Haverfarm Manager, Cassandra Brown.The Haverfarm is a year-round farming and educational space designed to integrate sustainable food and agriculture into the academic and extracurricular lives of Haverford students, faculty, staff, and community members. Come explore the farm and reflect on seasonal changes as we end our summer season and prepare for the fall. Cassandra will lead a tour exploring the vision for the farm's future and ways that everyone can be involved!Please dress for the weather and wear good walking shoes.

Attend a foraging walk with Philadelphia Mycology Club's founder Bethany Teigen.Join us for a casual stroll around campus hunting for mushrooms! Bethany Teigen, founder of the Philadelphia Mycology Club, will lead the way teaching participants how to properly forage for mushrooms. This class is intended for beginners and will include a general introduction to the fungal kingdom and identification information on each specimen found. Please remember to wear good walking shoes and dress for the weather.

Volunteer with Haverford College Arboretum!Every other Tuesday during the active volunteer season (April - October) the Arboretum hosts volunteer workdays open to the community. Each session is led by a staff member and focuses on gardening in a different area of campus. Activities will vary each week and can include but are not limited to planting, weeding, mulching, clearing invasives, and watering. The tasks required in each specific session will be announced monthly via our volunteer eNews email (sign up here). As an Arboretum volunteer, you can learn new skills, gain experience, and become a valued member of our volunteer

From bees and wasps to caterpillars and butterflies, goldenrods support hundreds of insects and deserve a place in your garden. Join us to learn how goldenrod can add beauty and biodiversity to any landscape!This class will feature both a workshop and a walk-around to visit some goldenrod on campus. Learn the basics in plant ID with horticulturist, Briar Maverick.Join horticulturist Briar Maverick on a walking tour of the Arboretum as he discusses the basics of plant identification: leaf arrangement and morphology; flower and fruit structure; bark; and growth habit. We'll look at real-world examples and explain terminology while appreciating seasonal highlights. This tour is designed for beginners to learn how to look at plants and tell one plant from another but is open to all experience levels. Please remember to wear good walking shoes and dress for the weather.
