Join us for a guided tour highlighting key pest and disease issues in Southeastern PA.We will walk a pre-scouted route of the Arboretum to showcase some key pest and disease issues common to Southeastern PA. Insect and mite issues will include hemlock woolly adelgid, spruce spider mite, white pine sheath mite, boxwood leafminer, boxwood mite, and various scales. We will also discuss the protection of pollinators and other beneficial insects through the proper use of registered products. This walk is cosponsored and led by Chris Ward of John B. Ward & Co. Join us for a celebratory tree planting!In 2017 the Arboretum underwent a tree risk assessment that resulted in us having to remove approximately 500 trees from campus. We set a goal that within ten years we would plant two trees for each tree removed meaning that we would add an additional 1,000 trees to campus by 2027. We are happy to report that we have met that goal early and will be planting our 1,000th tree on Friday, June 16, 2023! Please join us in celebrating our accomplishment as we plant a Styrax obassia, fragrant snowbell, on Lloyd Green.

North zone horticulturist, Briar Maverick will lead the way in a hands-on pruning class!Summer is the time to prune many iconic spring-blooming shrubs, like azaleas and lilacs. Join Briar for a hands-on workshop to learn about summer pruning, as well as rejuvenation pruning for large or mature shrubs. Participation in the spring pruning workshop is not required to attend the summer session. This class is outdoors so please dress for the weather. Gloves and tools will be provided. If you have your own pruners, loppers, or handsaw that you would like to use please bring it along with you. Parking

Join Brice Dorwart for an informational walk on campus. ISA CEUs are available for certified arborists!Join Brice Dorwart and arborist professionals as they explore Haverford's summer landscape and learn how to identify deciduous tree species commonly found in the Philadelphia area. Brice is an ISA-certified, local teaching arborist. This walk will be attended by Arboretum members and Davey Resource Group employees who work with PECO's vegetation management department. Wear good walking shoes and dress for the weather. If the weather is particularly bad the class will be rescheduled for the following Thursday, July 20th (same times). Participation in this class

Tour our on-campus farm with Haverfarm Manager, Cassandra Brown.The Haverfarm is a year-round farming and educational space designed to integrate sustainable food and agriculture into the academic and extracurricular lives of Haverford students, faculty, staff, and community members. Come explore the farm and reflect on seasonal changes as we end our summer season and prepare for the fall. Attend a foraging walk with Philadelphia Mycology Club's founder Bethany Teigen.Join us for a casual stroll around campus hunting for mushrooms! Bethany Teigen, founder of the Philadelphia Mycology Club, will lead the way teaching participants how to properly forage for mushrooms. This class is intended for beginners and will include a general introduction to the fungal kingdom and identification information on each specimen found. Samantha Newstory will lead the way with a workshop and garden stroll. With their stunning yellow flowers, goldenrods are one of the hallmark plants of autumn. But they do more than delight the eye. From bees and wasps to caterpillars and butterflies, goldenrods support hundreds of insects and deserve a place in your garden. Join us to learn how goldenrod can add beauty and biodiversity to any landscape!This class will feature both a workshop and a walk-around to visit some goldenrod on campus. Learn the basics in plant ID with horticulturist, Briar Maverick.Join horticulturist Briar Maverick on a walking tour of the Arboretum as he discusses the basics of plant identification: leaf arrangement and morphology; flower and fruit structure; bark; and growth habit. We'll look at real-world examples and explain terminology while appreciating seasonal highlights. This tour is designed for beginners to learn how to look at plants and tell one plant from another but is open to all experience levels. Join master beekeeper, Vincent Aloyo, for a talk about our friend the honey bee.Honey bees are key pollinators, enabling or enhancing food production. In gathering their own food, bees move pollen from flower to flower, allowing plants to produce seed-containing fruits (some of which we call vegetables). Although many bees and insects are efficient pollinators, Vincent Aloyo, Master Beekeeper, will explain the characteristics that make honey bees useful pollinators. Attend this workshop to learn all about the types of cavity-nesting bees with Jennie KellyJoin us for a workshop all about cavity-nesting bees in Pennsylvania. Several species of mason and leafcutter bees nest in small cavities. In this workshop we will learn about these species, their environmental impact, and how they build their homes. You can even help support this insect by installing a home in your backyard. We will go over the steps necessary to do so, and how to maintain the home. Dispose of your electronic waste sustainably during Earth WeekHelp us celebrate Earth Week by participating in an electronics recycling drive. This event is a collaboration between Haverford's Committee for Environmental Responsibility (CER), the Arboretum, and PAR-Recycleworks. Large appliances, light bulbs, and batteries will not be accepted. All data on devices is wiped and destroyed.This event will take place in the South Lot. The drive will then be open to the entire community from 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m. Most items are able to be recycled free of cost, but some items have a cost in order to ensure they are

Celebrate Arbor Day with the Arboretum!The Arboretum has a longstanding tradition of planting trees on Arbor Day. First observed at Haverford on April 4, 1902, representatives of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association came out to the campus to celebrate the holiday. It became such a popular celebration that in the early 1900s a song was arranged by J. H. Redfield, Class of 1899, and published by Hums and Noble. Over the years, the Arboretum has planted hundreds of trees in honor of this special day.This year Aaron Greenberg will be our guest speaker. Aaron is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist

Samantha Newstory will lead the way with an informational garden stroll.Explore the fascinating world of insects with naturalist Samantha Nestory during this early evening walk through the Arboretum. We’ll search for insect pollinators, predators, and everything in between, all while learning about the importance of insects and how we can support these vital critters in our own landscapes.Please dress for the weather as this class will take place entirely outdoors. Join environmental educator, Rebecca Silvey, for a program for young learners (ages 2 - 4) and their caregivers.For young learners ages 2 - 4 years and their favorite caregiver. We will sing songs, dance, and explore nature using our senses. Please bring a picnic blanket, sturdy footwear, sun protection, water, and anything else you need for you and your little one to feel comfortable. Children younger than 2 are welcome to attend for free, but older siblings will need to register for a ticket. Dispose of your electronic waste sustainably during Earth Week with PAR!Help us celebrate Earth Week by participating in an electronics recycling drive. This event is a collaboration between Haverford's Committee for Environmental Responsibility (CER), the Arboretum, and PAR-Recycleworks. Large appliances, light bulbs, and batteries will not be accepted. All data on devices is wiped and destroyed.This event will take place in the South Lot. Celebrate Arbor Day with the Arboretum!The Arboretum has a longstanding tradition of planting trees on Arbor Day. First observed at Haverford on April 4, 1902, representatives of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association came out to the campus to celebrate the holiday. It became such a popular celebration that in the early 1900s a song was arranged by J. H. Redfield, Class of 1899, and published by Hums and Noble. Volunteer with the Haverford College Arboretum at our annual Plant SaleThe Arboretum is having a plant sale and needs volunteers to make our event a success. Volunteer roles include helping with setup/teardown, assisting the checkout station, and working the plant tables. Volunteer shifts can range in time. Any necessary equipment will be provided at the event. This event is weather dependent and a reminder email will be sent out the week of clarifying any weather-related concerns.
