FOR ALL AGES For more than fifty years, volunteers at Tyler Arboretum have been monitoring the nesting activities of the Eastern Bluebird.  Please join us on this family-friendly tour to share this tradition.  We will walk the succession field and check on quite a few bluebird boxes.  We expect to see bluebirds, active nests of bluebirds and other cavity-nesting birds, eggs, and young nestlings!  We will be walking on grassy fields, so bug spray is recommended. The landscape includes a lush lowland area with three springs enveloped in lovely ferns and mosses. An area of serpentine rock is readily observed, this being an extension of the outcropping that is Pink Hill. FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17 In the first half of the 20th century, the American chestnut tree was all but eliminated from the forests of eastern North America by an imported fungal disease, commonly known as chestnut blight. In cooperation with the American Chestnut Foundation, Tyler Arboretum is host to a preservation orchard where surviving examples of this tree are raised and bred as part of the conservation effort to restore this iconic tree to eastern forests. Tall trees, fungi, native plants and bird song are all there to see and hear. The Weekend Warm-up Hike is back! Start your Friday off right with a brisk, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas within the deer exclusion fence. The Weekend Warm-up Hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles. However, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers as we explore both familiar areas of the Arboretum and “hidden gems.” Be prepared for a mix of asphalt, gravel and natural surfaces. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. The Native Woodland Walk at Tyler highlights the beauty of the woodlands of Southeastern Pennsylvania and showcases some of our native species that thrive and enhance home gardens. In spring, this garden comes alive with spring ephemerals, flowering shrubs, and more. On this leisurely-paced tour, Mallory will highlight the garden’s seasonal wonders, talk about the plants she’s added, and discuss her vision for the future. We will be walking on uneven paths. FOR ALL AGES Dismal Run has been designated the cleanest stream in Delco, and it flows right through Tyler Arboretum! Join Tyler’s Executive Director, Mike Skuja, as we explore a tributary of Dismal Run along the Blue Trail. Mike will discuss the significance of riparian buffers and stormwater management solutions. We will also observe the impact of the emerald ash borer and learn about forest management practices implemented in response to the ash tree crisis, as well as upcoming restoration initiatives. Be prepared for a mix of asphalt, gravel and natural surfaces. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. We recommend bringing along a reusable water bottle.
