Spring ephemerals and wildflowers must complete part of their life cycle before the tree canopy leafs out, reducing light levels at the forest floor. These plants face many challenges including unpredictable weather and pollinator availability. Spring wildflowers have special adaptations to overcome these challenges, and intricate relationships with pollinators and seed dispersers.     Non-native invasive plants, like Japanese barberry and English ivy, damage our environment by invading natural areas and outcompeting native plants. To help stop the spread, the Delaware state legislature recently passed a law banning the sale of 36 invasive plant species. Join Leah Brooks as she presents beautiful native alternatives to these invasive ornamentals and explains how making these substitutes helps protect our ecosystems.     Grab binoculars and join us in counting birds at Mariton. Since 1981, staff and volunteers have conducted an annual nesting bird census to count the number of species and individual birds breeding at this 200-acre preserve. The census results serve as an important tool to help assess habitat management strategies. Healthy habitats sustain various nesting species, including flycatchers, tanagers, thrushes, and warblers. Mariton’s woodlands are particularly important to birds like the Wood Thrush, which requires large forests for nesting.
