Pauline Oliveros’ (1932-2016) life as a composer, performer and humanitarian was about opening her own and others’ sensibilities to the universe and facets of sounds. Her career spanned fifty years of boundary dissolving music making. In the ’50s, she was part of a circle of iconoclastic composers, artists, and poets gathered in San Francisco. In the ’60s, she influenced American music profoundly through her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth, and ritual.

  • Mindful Birding

    Mindful birding combines observing birds with mindfulness techniques, creating a practice that incorporates heightened awareness. Labeling or identifying birds is not the primary focus. Instead, the intention is to slow down and notice the world around us, using birds as our guides. During this guided experience, you’ll practice simple mindfulness exercises to engage sensory awareness while intentionally tuning into the birds surrounding you.   Techniques and prompts accompany this gently guided walk and/or “sit spot” experience, which strive to enhance our observation skills, promoting a deepening of our experiences with birds around us.     The diverse gardens of Stoneleigh sustain a variety of migratory birds during their autumn journeys. Flycatchers, orioles, thrushes, and warblers wing their way across the garden, stopping to fuel up during their journeys. Bring a pair of binoculars and get ready for an exclusive, early–morning, guided experience as we look and listen for birds in the tranquility of the garden before it opens to the general public.

  • Tree Drawing for Beginners Workshop Series

    Join artist Henry Martin for this four-session class designed for anyone who enjoys the natural world and wants to explore it more deeply through drawing. This is a basic drawing class based on nature highlighting—but not limited to—trees. The first week will focus on paying attention to our perceptions through common artists’ exercises. In the second week, we’ll analyze the structure of the plants we will draw. The remaining weeks will allow us to explore the fun and joy we can experience with drawing, with opportunities for self-directed focus and subjects.    Series Dates: October 7, 14, 21, & 28 required

    Enjoy dazzling displays of native plants, stately trees, and historical landscapes by the Olmsted Brothers that have been thoughtfully reimagined into a beautiful and biodiverse haven for people and wildlife.   The spectacular Tudor Revival Main House—which is usually only open for special events—is also included in the tour, so don’t miss this opportunity for a peek inside the former home of three prominent Main Line families.

Our sylvan state is home to eight species of these majestic birds, but only three species (Great Horned, Barred, and Eastern Screech) are year-round residents. Join us on a leisurely stroll as we look and listen for owls in the garden, while also learning about their calls, nesting habits, and the unique adaptations that make them such skilled, nocturnal hunters.  

  • A Not-So-Silent Movie Night

    Just in time for Halloween, Natural Lands and the Organ Historical Society (OHS) present a thrilling evening of classic cinema with organ accompaniment at Stoneleigh’s Main House. The 1925 silent film classic “The Phantom of the Opera” was originally intended to be screened with a live orchestral score. For this special evening, award-winning organist Peter Krasinski will bring the film to life with his energetic musical interpretation.    To complete the movie theatre experience, guests will enjoy freshly popped popcorn, a candy bar, and beer and wine at the bar.    This event is intended for adults 18 and over.    Doors open
