Register for timed tickets in order to tour the first floor of the historic house and learn how people made do on cold December nights before the advent of electricity and central heating.

The Clay Studio presents Figuring Space, a new exhibition comprised of full-scale, figurative sculptures by 12 leading ceramic artists based in the United States. Each of the artists explores their individual cultural identity and what it means to be human through their figurative sculptures. The powerful figures will serve as a body of evidence to lay bare the issues that permeate American art and social culture. Figuring Space is co-curated by Jennifer Zwilling, Curator and Director of Artistic Programs at The Clay Studio, and Dr. Kelli Morgan, Professor of the Practice and Director of Cultural Studies at Tufts University.

Black Queer Writers Remembered: A Black Queer Community Reads Anita Cornwell and Adrian Stanford

In an evening of live readings and performance, members of Philadelphia’s Black queer community revive rare works by prolific Philadelphia writers Anita Cornwell and Adrian Stanford. Published in 1983, Anita Cornwell's Black Lesbian in White America was the first essay collection by a Black lesbian to be published in the U.S. Cornwell, who came out as a lesbian in the 1950s, has also been published and anthologized as a journalist, fiction writer, and poet. Reconstructing Black Families: Stories from the Chew Papers

Spread throughout the 288.5 linear feet of the Chew Family Papers at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania is the evidence of the lives of early American families of African descent, both free and enslaved. Recent digitization work and research by the African American Genealogy Group (AAGG) has started to re-create family groups from the Mid-Atlantic region. Hear from members of AAGG on their findings and learn from Cliveden staff about the impact this work has on the interpretation at a local historic site.
