Join our partner, Morris Arboretum, for a program to learn how dead and dying trees still teem with life, from tiny termites to fantastic flying squirrels and everything in between. This program will begin inside with a lecture and discussion and then move outdoors to explore the way Stoneleigh: a natural garden has worked to incorporate dead wood into its landscape projects and native plantings.     Join Philadelphia Mycology Club’s Kevin Popowich for a Fungi Foray along the trails of Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary to discover and uncover the wonderful world of mycology.   • Annual Nesting Bird Census

    Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary 240 Sunnyside Road, Easton, Pennsylvania

    Grab binoculars and join us in counting birds at Mariton. Since 1981, staff and volunteers have conducted an annual nesting bird census to count the number of species and individual birds breeding at this 200-acre preserve. The census results serve as an important tool to help assess habitat management strategies. Healthy habitats sustain various nesting species, including flycatchers, tanagers, thrushes, and warblers. Mariton’s woodlands are particularly important to birds like the Wood Thrush, which requires large forests for nesting.

Join natural dyer and textile artist Laura Hricko for a hands-on workshop at Stoneleigh, where the surrounding landscape will serve as both inspiration and resource. Using locally grown and native dye flowers and foliage, this workshop will guide you through the natural dye technique known as “eco-printing” to create either a set of two linen napkins or an organic cotton bandana and silk scarf.   As we work, we’ll discuss the fundamentals of natural dyeing, including fiber preparation, plant selection, and the unique qualities of plant dyes.

    Initiate your own exploration of the great outdoors at one of our preserves, open from dawn to dusk. Some preserves are only open six days a week (one day reserved for rest; please check the website before you visit). Once you upload your photo discovery to iNaturalist, it will automatically appear in our “project,” which allows Natural Lands staff, volunteers, and scientists to see what species are present at our preserved open spaces.     Whooo wants to learn more about Pennsylvania’s owls? Dawn White, owner and certified environmental educator with Indian Run Environmental Education Center (IREEC) will present an exciting program with live, non-releasable owls.
