    Join Scribe Video Center and Big Picture Alliance for a screening of "Searching for the Songs of Wanaragua" at Scribe on December 12, 7PM. This short documentary follows Cesar Vargas, a Garifuna language teacher and researcher from Honduras, and Eli LaBan, a documentary filmmaker from Philadelphia, as they record and translate traditional songs to use as teaching tools to support the revitalization of the endangered afro-indigenous Garifuna language in Honduras. Eli LaBan is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker who has worked on projects pertaining to social development, cultural preservation, and education across the world.

    Live music blends with classic film in this movie-concert by France’s Alcoléa & cie. A Philadelphia debut, Right in the Eye celebrates Georges Méliès, a pioneer of the cinema and inventor of special effects, by adding an original, multi-layered score to complement and interpret 12 of his otherwise silent films. A trio of musicians play an extraordinary range of 50 instruments, from the classics to the obscure, evoking the technical wizardry and playful creativity that defined Méliès’ work. This unique production puts music and film in perfect harmony to reimagine cinema’s early years.
