NESAWG’s Sankofa Series is back!

In 2023, our online Sankofa Series will be lifting voices of color, focusing on our history and roots, celebrating identities and cultures, and learning from movements of resilience and change. This is part of NESAWG’s Racial Equity Transformation work in the farm & food systems.

Agenda

This special session examines the radical cultural and political technologies Black people innovated to help feed, house and free each other from jail in the midst of civil rights political struggle

• Exploring the ways in which Black people fed each other in the midst of movement work
• Looking at the politics of Black land usage during the modern civil rights movement

At the end of Marco’s presentation NESAWG will invite participants to a discussion on how this session connects to today’s land and food system in the Northeast region. What lessons can we learn about this history and mobilize to create the systems change needed? With this foundation that was laid out, how do we envision a farm and food system change rooted in love and what role should NESAWG be playing in the region?

Presenter

Marco A. McWilliams is a Black Studies scholar and adjunct professor, a DEI/J and education consultant, and a movement-based organizer/educator. He is a published writer with nearly two decades of engaged scholarship work in convening diverse learning communities. He is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and owner of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu studio where he teaches personal self-defense to marginalized communities.

Sankofa Series

Sankofa is a word from the Akan people of Ghana. It means “go back and fetch it” and reminds us the importance of reaching back to knowledge gained in the past and bringing it into the present in order to ensure a strong future. The Sankofa Series is a webinar series sharing the wisdom of our network and community who are working towards an equitable and just food system.

Registration fees for the Sankofa Series webinars are on a sliding scale, which means, “pay what you can”. If you are able to do so, we request a contribution of $15-100 to pay a living wage to organizers and provide a stipend to presenters.
