Annual Nesting Bird Census

June 6 @ 7:30 am - 12:00 pm

Grab binoculars and join us in counting birds at Mariton. Since 1981, staff and volunteers have conducted an annual nesting bird census to count the number of species and individual birds breeding at this 200-acre preserve.

The census results serve as an important tool to help assess habitat management strategies. Healthy habitats sustain various nesting species, including flycatchers, tanagers, thrushes, and warblers. Mariton’s woodlands are particularly important to birds like the Wood Thrush, which requires large forests for nesting.

The songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, and shorebirds—about 300 recorded species—that rely on habitats under Natural Lands care are not just beautiful but also essential to the health of our planet. What’s more, they are environmental indicators, warning us of climate shifts and other ecosystem changes.
