Go Native this Planting Season

Start

Looking to spruce up your garden while creating habitat for local wildlife? Skip the hostas and begonias and try some native plants instead! Lots of flowers can feed area pollinators, and birds will eat exotic berries, but many of our local bugs are finely adapted to the plants they evolved eating. Choosing native plants benefits these picky eaters — and everything up the food chain.

The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education’s native plant sale runs through the end of June and offers dozens of native plants, from trees (like American persimmons and scarlet oaks) that could one day tower over your grandchildren to wildflowers (like wild geranium) that can thrive in a container in front of your rowhouse.
