For the third year, the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers (POWR) is partnering with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to hold this statewide competition. The goal is to improve public awareness and community support of state waterways. In the past, winning waterways have included the Delaware River (2011) and the Stonycreek River (2012).
The organization that nominates the winning river will be given $10,000 to help fund a year-long series of activities, which include a one-day event in June and an overnight River Sojourn paddling trip.
Only nonprofit organizations in Pennsylvania can nominate rivers, but the entire public is invited to help choose the winner. Nominations will close Friday, Nov. 16, and voting will take place in December and January.
