How to: Publish Artist Books and Zines

For this session of Creative Conversations, we’ll be joined by Tom Marquet (@partnersandson), Nicole Rodrigues (@lost.mirage), and Madeleine Conover (@maddogdiggittydog) to talk about creating, publishing, and promoting artist books and zines.

About the Speakers

Tom Marquet lives in Philadelphia, where he runs the comic bookstore and community event space, Partners And Son, with his partner Gina Dawson. Partners And Son is a central hub for the illustration scene in Philadelphia. The shop features an extensive collection of indie comics, zines, and rare books from various independent publishers.

Nicole Rodrigues is an artist and educator whose work blends craft and illustration in narrative pieces that can transcend timelines and dimensions while evolving a dream-like folklore experience through the usage of symbols. Wanting to make the everyday seem magical and surreal, Nicole creates comics to help interpret the world around them and inside of them. Nicole’s work offers a hopeful avenue of possibilities in a world too often worn down with existential dread, in order to face our own shadows to plan for personal growth.

Madeleine Conover is a Chinese American adoptee and artist based in Philadelphia. Her images and sculptures explore her ideas of the Asian American diaspora and her adoption due to China’s former one-child policy. Her recent work focuses on the subsequent discovery of her biological family and community building with adoptees. Conover was raised in Washington, DC, by a single mother. She received an MFA in Printmaking from the Tyler School of Art & Architecture and a BA in Studio Art and Sustainable Food & Farming from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her work has been included in solo and group exhibitions in Philadelphia, Western Massachusetts, New York City, and the Bay Area. She has participated in artist residency programs at Ceramics School, Directangle Press, Pyramid Atlantic Art Institute, Second State Press, Kala Art Institute, and Wassaic Project.

She also recently started her own small risograph publishing press, Mad Dog Studio.
