Introduction to Botanical Collecting

A class taught by Emily Humphreys, Eli Kirk Price Plant Science Fellow at the Morris Arboretum.
Around the world, there are roughly 350 million pressed plant specimens that contain ecological information spanning centuries. In addition to being beautiful and historically significant, these botanical collections are the foundation of much of the work botanists do every day. This class will give you the fundamental skills to be a part of that process.
Over the course of two sessions, you’ll learn about the history and science of botanical collecting. Then, put those skills to use in collecting, pressing, and mounting your very own specimen to take home. Plus, tour the Arboretum’s herbarium, an active research collection of more than 25,000 pressed plants!
Two Sessions: Saturday May 6 and 13
