In this workshop participants will be guided to experiment with different papermaking techniques to create a one of a kind Valentine's! During this workshop participants will learn the basic Western papermaking process and will be introduced to creative experimental techniques. Working with stencils, thread, cut paper and moulds students will learn to manipulate different colored paper pulps to complete a full image.Participants are encouraged to bring stencils, thread, fabrics, paper or other flat objects of their preference to include on their Valentine’s creation. All levels of experience are welcome, no prior experience needed.Materials needed by participants:Rubber bootsPlastic apron

Paper Making workshop – Blow Outs

Spring Paper Making SeriesIn this two-hour workshop participants will be guided to experiment with the Western papermaking process of blow-outs to create a unique layered image. Working with stencils and a hose, students will learn to create an image by subtracting pulp and layering the resulting images. Through this manipulation and juxtaposition of different colored paper pulps participants will create a one of a kind all-paper piece. Participants are encouraged to bring mylar stencils, lace fabrics, or other waterproof objects of their preference to include on their creation. All levels of experience are welcome, no prior experience needed.Water resistant footwear

Paper Making workshop – Imbedding

Spring Paper Making SeriesIn this two-hour workshop participants will be introduced to the basics of Western papermaking and will experiment with embedding different flat objects and materials in handmade paper. Working with organic matter from the grounds of Historic Rittenhouse Town, thread, cut paper (etc.) students will learn to create unique pieces of handmade paper by encapsulating the materials of their choice within it. All levels of experience are welcome, no prior experience needed.Water resistant footwear encouraged.

Get in back-to-school mode with your very own handmade sketchbook!Head back to school with a unique, one-of-a-kind, handmade sketchbook. Students will learn the craft of basic bookbinding while creating a take-home book or journal using recycled and environmentally conscience materials. Basic supplies and materials are provided. Participants are encouraged to bring fabric, stencils, or waterproof objects to include in their creations.All materials provided. Ages 13-18. $20 per person, max 15 people

Intro to Bookbinding

Make your own one-of-a-kind book using techniques employed since the first century.Take home a one-of-a-kind book using the methods from about the first through the mid-19th centuries. You will learn how to hand sew the book sections (called signatures), secure the hardcovers, add a leather or cloth spine and decorative paper to the covers, and lay down the endpapers. Participants will also be provided step-by-step written instructions you can bring home.Includes half-hour lunch break$120 per person14 years & up.

Make your one-of-a-kind marbled paper!Developed by the Persians in the 15th century, marbling is the art of floating and designing watercolors on a base fluid then permanently transferring the design to paper. You will learn how to prepare the paper to accept the paint, mix the colors for marbling, create the base fluid, float the colors on the base and create your design. You'll then transfer the design to paper you can take home with you.Includes half-hour lunch break$120 per person14 years & up.
