  • Reconstructing Black Families: Stories from the Chew Papers

    Spread throughout the 288.5 linear feet of the Chew Family Papers at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania is the evidence of the lives of early American families of African descent, both free and enslaved. Recent digitization work and research by the African American Genealogy Group (AAGG) has started to re-create family groups from the Mid-Atlantic region. Hear from members of AAGG on their findings and learn from Cliveden staff about the impact this work has on the interpretation at a local historic site.     Cliveden’s next Second Saturday event on July 8th, from 9am to 4pm, and the theme is Citizenship! Local organization Victoria Urban Outreach Tutoring Service (VUOTS) will host a civic engagement and legislative conversation with Every Voice, Every Vote, a collaborative project managed by The Lenfest Institute for Journalism. From 9am to 12pm, community members are welcome to volunteer in the gardens and assist the Preservation Director in maintaining the greenspace. Tools and directions will be provided, no experience is necessary. Volunteers should come to the Carriage House and Barn, located at 98 E. Cliveden Street, 19119, to meet with Libbie.

  • Spotlight Tour: Is There Still Water In That Well? The Restoration of the 18th & 19th Century Well and Wood Well Pump at the Cliveden Kitchen Dependency

    Part of the Transcending Thresholds initiative to study, restore and interpret the service spaces at Cliveden, this innovative project will conserve and restore the early well to function. Cliveden Preservation Director Libbie Hawes and architectural conservator Andy Palewski will discuss the construction and technology that provided necessary water for the kitchen and household in the 18th and 19th centuries. The project included removing three sections of wood well pump, restoring the 40-foot-deep stone well shaft and removing the objects and mud at the bottom. The effort now focuses on restoring the pump sections and forged hardware, including recreating the technology
