Learn how to protect our toads! Toad Detour protects the local toad population as they migrate to and from their breeding grounds each spring. When the toads emerge from brumation (the reptile version of hibernation) in early spring, hundreds of them cross Port Royal, Hagy’s Mill and other nearby roads to mate in the Roxborough Reservoir or the Schuylkill Center’s ponds. On select nights, when the conditions are just right, Toad Detour volunteers erect barricades and help divert traffic during busy toad crossing evenings, saving hundreds of toads. Join us to help plant along the Jenkintown Creek that runs behind McKinley Elementary (370 Cedar Rd, Elkins Park, PA 19027) on Sunday, October 20th from 10 am – 1 pm. We will be working to plant a number of trees and shrubs to help reestablish canopy cover along the creek and revitalize the existing riparian buffer on site. Please fill out the form below. TTF will provide tools and gloves and will have masks, hand sanitizer, water, and snacks for volunteers if needed. We recommend that volunteers wear hats, closed-toe shoes, and comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing that can get dirty.

Volunteers will support seasonal plantings, weeding, invasive species removal, and support greenhouse maintenance. Registered volunteers will meet at the Welcome Center promptly at 9:30 AM. Staff will separate groups and provide instructions and safety protocols for the day. Out of respect and safety for our staff and others, please arrive on time. PLEASE NOTE: Capacity is limited; participants MUST be pre-registered (using link below) in order to partake. Each adult must register individually in order to complete the required waivers. Meet new friends and join neighbors to make Tacony Creek Park the wonderful community green space that our neighborhood deserves.
