    Bluebird numbers were once in decline but thanks to the efforts of conservation minded individuals and organizations their numbers have increased. Unfortunately, some Bluebird lovers think they are doing a good deed by simply putting up a nest box in their back yard. That is not the case and often can do more harm than good. Join us for this informative session if you are interested in being a responsible Bluebird ‘landlord’ or just want to learn more about these charismatic and native cavity nesting birds.

    Riverbend is excited to host local illustrator Kate Garchinsky for a reading of "The Secret Life of the Red Fox" followed by an art workshop. This fun, educational story is perfect for a winter's day. The story begins on a snowy February afternoon and follows the mother fox’s life cycle as the seasons change around her. Following the book reading, Kate will lead participants through an art project. This event is intended for children ages 6-12. A parent or guardian must accompany the child to the event.   • Forest Stargazing

    Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, 8480 Hagy's Mill Road, Philadelphia, PA, 19128, United States

    Experience the glowing wonders of our forest through a multi-sensory nighttime event. Director of Environmental Art and certified yoga teacher Kristina Murray will offer a grounding meditation in opening the senses. Artist and stargazer Ana Vizcarra Rankin will then lead the group on a naked-eye stargazing hike, inspired by her practice of studying star maps and telescope imaging. Educator and amateur mycologist Matt Schink will aid us along the way in spotting and understanding the beauty of bioluminescent fungi.

    The 2nd annual Philly Birding Weekend will be hosted Oct. 13 - 15, 2023! We are bringing back some favorite field trips from last year, such as The Woodlands and John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. We are also adding new field trips, including excursions to the Navy Yard and Belmont Plateau. We hope that you'll consider joining us for another fun weekend of birding in Philadelphia.     Saturday, February 10th from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm Weathering the Winter Winters were harsh in the 18th century, but even in cold and snowy weather there was still plenty of work to do around the farm. Fires had to be built, food preserved and cooked, and animals needed tending. Visit the Farmstead on February 10th to watch our living historians demonstrate the types of farm chores a family like the Wentzes would have had to do this time of year.     Join us with your family to adopt and plant trees at Riverbend. Fall is a wonderful time to plant trees just before it turns colder in the winter months. Planting trees at the preserve helps to provide habitat to local wildlife, combat climate change and helps to maintain our local water supply as the trees we plant keep runoff from heading to the Schuylkill River watershed.
