    Native edible and medicinal plant species can be integrated into gardens and ecological restoration projects to create habitats that support (and include) humans as part of local ecosystems. We’ll consider stewarding edible and medicinal plant species in native habitats such as riparian corridors and glades and discuss how a habitat-based approach translates to yards, parks, and farms. We’ll explore the prospect of changing our foodways to patterns that favor native diversity, rewarding restoration and stewardship. This program takes place online on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.   • Winter Gulls at Glen Foerd

    Glen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter.     The Historical Society of Frankford (HSF) today invites the public to hear Roger Turner, curator of instruments and artifacts at the Science History Institute of Philadelphia, speak at its monthly meeting on April 14, 2026 at 7:30 PM. The doors open at 7:00 PM. His topic will be “Weird, Wonderful, Playful and Profound: Treasures of the Science History Institute”. The venue is the HSF library/museum, located at 1507 Orthodox St, Philadelphia. The event is free and open to the public, and parking is available across Orthodox Street at the Frankford Friends School. Light refreshments will be served.
