We’ll be checking out nighttime insects and animals in the Garden with Naturalist Ken Frank (author of Ecology of Center City Philadelphia, Garden Horticulturalist Mandy Katz, and young Entomologist Adam Knap in the wooded Lower Garden nearby the Schuylkill River, luring an incredible array of nocturnal insects with black lights, overripe bananas, and molasses.     As temperatures cool and the soil dries, the creatures that don’t migrate are preparing for winter!   • Walking The Edge Exhibit

    Walking the Edge is a communal display on the experience of walking in nature. We are inviting the public to share their creative impressions, reflections and encounters on walking borders, limits and perimeters in nature as they are expressed through art. Curated by Jacques-Jean Tiziou of “Walk Around Philadelphia”, our fourth bi-annual community exhibition embraces walking as an artistic practice that reflects on our interconnectedness with nature.

  • Herbs & Crafts: Sow your Winter Garden with a DIY Mini Greenhouse

    Show the pollinators some love this February during the first ever Herbs & Crafts workshop at The Random Tea Room. Our resident artist Anastasia Alexandrin will be demonstrating how she sows her winter garden using up-cycled materials. In addition to creating the stunning imagery that is gracing the walls of the tea room through September 2023, Anastasia is fluent in flower speak and seems to have them springing up all around her.   • Great Backyard Bird Count at Laurel Hill Cemetery

    Participate in the global Great Backyard Bird Count this year with guided walks to count, identify, and learn about the birds of Laurel Hill East and Laurel Hill West, both accredited arboretums. Walks are facilitated by members of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club, and no birding experience is needed to join in! This event is presented by the Friends of Laurel Hill.   • “Expedition Reclamation” Film Screening

    Join Philadelphia Outward Bound School at The Discovery Center (3401 Reservoir Drive, Philadelphia, PA 19146) between 7-8:30pm for a FREE, in-person screening of the documentary Expedition Reclamation. Expedition Reclamation tells the stories of a dozen women of color and how they formed powerful relationships with the outdoors, challenging the definition of who is typically seen as “outdoorsy,” and seeking to build a reciprocal relationship with the land that honors local indigenous cultures and peoples. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with women of color and how they have created a connection with nature right here in Philadelphia.

  • Author Talk: Take the Road Less Traveled with Cindy Ross

    Join Cindy Ross for an evening of stories about raising kids in nature, living simply, and love of the outdoors. Cindy Ross has hiked the Appalachian Trail and, with her husband Todd Gladfelter, also explored the Pacific Crest and Continental Divide Trails. They included their young children on hikes of the Continental Divide Trail with the help of llamas and immersed them in nature while camping. Cindy has made her life’s work guiding people in nature, and a decade ago formed a nonprofit—River House PA—which connects Veterans to the outdoors to aid in healing trauma. Cindy Ross is the author
