Designing Layered Landscapes

Are you seeking a design process to build a resilient native garden that wildlife loves and weeds struggle to take root? Inspiration from nature is our best teacher when we create ecosystems in human spaces. We will practice drawing to scale the anatomy of a designed ecosystem, from essential native groundcovers or “green mulch” to structural canopy trees. This program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Saturday, April 26, 2025. About the Instructor: Elyse Jurgen, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co., rebuilds ecological literacy and biodiversity through hands-on ecological gardening experiences for all ages. She is CBLP Certified, Ecological/Permaculture Certified

From the subdued colors and fragrances of spring wildflowers to the exuberance of summer perennials and the captivating hues of fall foliage, discover a wealth of plants to satisfy your gardening needs throughout the seasons. Using Mt. Cuba’s stunning gardens, learn to identify 60 trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perennials for spring. Examine their key identifying characteristics, preferred growing conditions, overall size, and ecological significance. Students seeking the certificate must pass the onsite exam. Earth Day at Newlin Grist Mill

Help celebrate nature and protect the environment with our Earth Day volunteer event! Each year, we bring together diverse volunteers from the community, including individuals, families, scout troops, and youth groups, to work on projects that improve habitat for wildlife, protect important natural resources, and preserve the park’s plant and animal communities. Past projects have included planting trees, installing bird boxes, and stream cleanups. We will meet to plant trees, remove invasive plant species, repair trails, and improve habitat for wetland wildlife. Groups will be scheduled for 3 hour shifts (9am-12pm or 1-4pm). Nurture with Nature: Therapeutic Horticulture

Working with the healing power of plants can help to decrease stress and anxiety, process grief, and improve overall well-being. Combining eco-mindfulness and creative activities, the workshops in this series invite participants to learn about the uses and roles of specific native plants through the lens of natural cycles. Workshops are led by Kate Irvine, a licensed Therapeutic Horticulture Practitioner and mixed media artist. Participants are welcome to attend one, some, or all four 2025 sessions.
