Join us with your family to adopt and plant trees at Riverbend. Fall is a wonderful time to plant trees just before it turns colder in the winter months. Planting trees at the preserve helps to provide habitat to local wildlife, combat climate change and helps to maintain our local water supply as the trees we plant keep runoff from heading to the Schuylkill River watershed. Do you have invasive vines growing in your yard? Join Riverbend staff for the first event in our Sustainable Living Series to learn how to remove vines and turn them into something beautiful. We’ll begin the workshop outside with some easy-to-follow instructions on removing invasive vines like English Ivy and five-leaf akebia. Clippers and work gloves will be provided. Next we’ll move inside Riverbend’s barn to turn the vines into a decoration you can enjoy in your own home or gift to a loved one. Saturday, February 1 from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm Weathering the Winter Winters were harsh in the 18th century, but even in cold and snowy weather there was still plenty of work to do around the farm. Fires had to be built, food preserved and cooked, and animals needed tending. Visit the Farmstead on February 1st to watch our living historians demonstrate the types of farm chores a family like the Wentzes would have had to do this time of year. The native seeds are started outside in containers so they are protected from wildlife and benefit from the cold temperatures of winter. Celebrate Easter like a Swede at the American Swedish Historical Museum’s Easter Family Day! Join us on Sunday, April 6th, from 2-4 pm to experience Swedish Easter traditions. In Sweden, Easter kicks off with a trick-or-treat-like candy hunt on Maundy Thursday. Children dress up as Easter witches with long skirts, headscarves, painted red cheeks, and freckles and go from house to house, wishing people Happy Easter. The Girls' High Library was once a vibrant hub of learning, creativity, and inspiration. However, it has been closed since 2013. Its research materials still include World Book Encyclopedias and a physical card catalog. There is no access to digital books, electronic research materials, periodicals, and other critical technological resources to ensure that our students can excel and compete academically. Despite our school’s successes and strengths, our students cannot effectively engage with their present education and prepare for life after graduation without a library and a technologically accessible resource center.
