  • Urban Wildlife: Sharing Spaces (online)

  • Now + Then Marketplace Lucky Ducky Market

    Now + Then Marketplace returns to The Block at Sono St. Patty's Day weekend with over 80 local vendors inside and out. The vacant storefront next to Target & Yards on 5th Street will once again be activated by N+T Marketplace a year later, inantely proving their initiative to occupy empty storefronts in the 'Meantime'. The market will feature vendors ranging from Bean2bean coffee and candles from Queer Candle Co to vintage clothes and original artwork.The market is free to attend, dog, and kid friendly.   • Walking the Edge Community Exhibition Discussion

    The Center’s newest exhibition, Walking the Edge, is an exciting investigation into artistic expressions of the city of Philadelphia’s perimeters and boundaries, as well as other urban landscapes and natural spaces. For this community show, we invited the public to share their creative expressions on borders and edges in nature. Selected submissions are curated into a display, presented both in the Schuylkill Center’s art gallery and online on its website.   • Uncovering Bioluminescent Fungi (online)

  • “Expedition Reclamation” Film Screening

    Join Philadelphia Outward Bound School at The Discovery Center (3401 Reservoir Drive, Philadelphia, PA 19146) between 7-8:30pm for a FREE, in-person screening of the documentary Expedition Reclamation. Expedition Reclamation tells the stories of a dozen women of color and how they formed powerful relationships with the outdoors, challenging the definition of who is typically seen as “outdoorsy,” and seeking to build a reciprocal relationship with the land that honors local indigenous cultures and peoples. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with women of color and how they have created a connection with nature right here in Philadelphia.

    For over 30 years, the environmental justice movement has been fighting adverse environmental impacts that are disproportionately concentrated in poor neighborhoods and communities of color. An example in Philadelphia is the lack of tree canopy in certain neighborhoods, leading to higher incidences of heat-related illness and death during summer heat waves. What are the environmental justice issues facing Philadelphia neighborhoods and what government and citizen-led initiatives are empowering communities to work toward a more just and sustainable future?   • Forest Stargazing

    Experience the glowing wonders of our forest through a multi-sensory nighttime event. Director of Environmental Art and certified yoga teacher Kristina Murray will offer a grounding meditation in opening the senses. Artist and stargazer Ana Vizcarra Rankin will then lead the group on a naked-eye stargazing hike, inspired by her practice of studying star maps and telescope imaging. Educator and amateur mycologist Matt Schink will aid us along the way in spotting and understanding the beauty of bioluminescent fungi.

    You’re invited to celebrate the opening of a river is…, our first 2023 LandLab artist residency exhibition. LandLab is our immersive artist-in-residence program, providing artists or teams with resources and support to create innovative, site-specific installations or performative artworks. This year’s artists-in-residence, Bitter Officer-Narvasa and Yilu Jin, embarked on a textual and textural exploration of the Schuylkill River watershed. Weaving together memoir, research, and community-based practices, the artists used natural dyes and organic materials from riverbank plants to create textile pieces. Their work considers the legacies of neighborhood change and displacement along the Schuylkill and the increasing uncertainty of life

    In this interactive workshop, participants will read written works by authors including Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Alice Oswald, and Toni Morrison which reflect on the theme of rivers. We will discuss the symbolic and ecological role that rivers play in our lives and our environments, and create personal maps and “love letters” to the rivers and waterways that are important to us. This event is specifically for people who identify as Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC). If you do not identify as BIPOC, please attend the second installment of this workshop open to the general public.

  • Ride of Silence

    The annual Ride of Silence is an international ride that honors bicyclists killed or injured by motor vehicles. The 2023 Ride of Silence will be held on Wednesday, May 17, from 6:45 pm – 8 pm. This ride will start at the North Apron of City Hall with a short memorial ceremony and slow bike ride that will travel an 8-mile route at 9.5 miles per hour through Center City before ending the Art Museum for a memorial bike lift. The ride occurs rain or shine and we invite the entire bicycling community to join us as they have for the past 19 years.

    PWPvideo presents Mission Story Slam to gather the best mission-driven storytellers in Philadelphia to highlight their organizations and sustainable businesses.   • Native Flute-Making Workshop with Tchin and We Are the Seeds

    Learn how to make and play a Native courting flute with Tchin, an Indigenous Elder musician and culture bearer. We Are the Seeds is creating space for Native and Non-Native individuals to learn to make and play the Native courting flute, which holds unique historical and cultural significance. In a modern take on this traditional art, participants will make flutes out of PVC pipes. They will also have the opportunity to learn from and have discussions with Tchin, creating opportunities for cross-cultural understanding.

  • Natural Dyeing with Riverside Plants

    In this workshop with LandLab artist-in-residence Bitter Kalli, participants will learn about spring and summer plants found along the Schuylkill River that can be used to create natural dyes. Participants will learn the fundamentals of natural dyeing and will then naturally dye their own fabric. Participants are invited to bring their own items of clothing or fabric to dye, but this is not required; we will provide dye materials and fabric. This event is open to the general public; registration is required as space is limited to 10 participants.

  • Champagne Garden Tour at Andalusia Historic House, Gardens & Arboretum
