Join Paul Robeson House & Museum with Leeway x IPMF Media Artist-Activist in Residence Malkia Okech to collectively launch the process towards a digital catalog of the collections at Paul Robeson House & Museum/West Philadelphia Cultural Alliance.
This introductory event is an information session regarding opportunities and needs of building a digital archive at PRHM/WPCA. Together we will brainstorm the following:
How do we remember the history of our community?
What can we do to preserve these memories?
What can we learn from the cultural organizing of the past?
How can we collectively own this process?
How does art inform or derive meaning from archive building?
What skills would you like to develop to use for your own archive?
This event will review volunteer opportunities, workshops, and maker spaces that will occur from September to November, with a launch of the database using Omeka in December. In addition, artists are invited to gather at PRHM/WPCA in November to engage in a communal making process with an opportunity to be exhibited alongside the database. This work also coincides with the development of the soon to be named library / resource room.
The core goal of this project is to bring together and build upon the West Philadelphia arts and memory worker community, experimenting with the tools of preservation technology along the way.
